Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village - one of four ancient villages in Vietnam being preserved by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Every year, it attracts hundreds of thousands of international visitors.
From Ho Chi Minh City, following National Highway 1 to the West about 120km, visitors will arrive at Dong Hoa Hiep ancient house village in Dong Hoa Hiep commune, Cai Be district, Tien Giang province.
The Dong Hoa Hiep ancient house village in Cai Be district is being preserved by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The ancient house area has a unique and distinctive architecture, bearing the mark of many historical periods, a famous tourist attraction in the charming river delta region of the West, attracting a large number of domestic and foreign tourists to enjoy during holidays and Tet.
Having the opportunity to visit the ancient house village at the beginning of the new year, Mr. Phan Van Duc (Tien Giang) and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoa (Long An) could not stop admiring the house built entirely of precious wood. In particular, in the middle of the house there are four large pillars made of red rosewood that have been used for many years, so the color is very dark and shiny.
Mr. Ba Duc's old house is over 175 years old.
In addition to the pillars, the house also has three sets of altars inlaid with shimmering mother-of-pearl, arranged according to the east-west principle. On the right hand side is a wooden box inlaid with dragons and inside is a decree of deification granted by King Tu Duc in 1948-1860. "I have lived for nearly 80 years, and now I have seen with my own eyes ancient houses that are hundreds of years old like this," Ms. Hoa happily confided.
According to Mr. Phan Quang Vinh (7th generation of the house owner), this ancient house was built in 1850 (over 175 years old), restored in 1938. The house was built on a 2-hectare plot of land, divided into two parts: the upper house and the lower house, separated by a yard - called the skylight - which plays the role of providing light.
Tourists experience the newly restored floating market at Tan Phong islet, Cai Lay district.
Ms. Nguyen Luu Mai Thanh (48 years old, living in Tan An City, Long An) said that during Tet, her family often travels to the West, not only visiting Dong Hoa Hiep ancient house, but also visiting Cai Be floating market, Thoi Son islet tourist area (My Tho City), admiring the beautiful scenery of Dong Thap Muoi ecological reserve, Tan Phuoc district, Tien Giang...
"At these tourist spots, my children are very excited by the peaceful space of the sweet fruit gardens located next to the canals, streams, and gentle rivers. Along with that are the natural forests with many rare species of animals and plants, hundreds of birds and storks flying in the sky at Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve", Ms. Thanh shared.
Many international delegations took souvenir photos at Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village.
Mr. Vo Thanh Phong, Director of Viet Phong Cai Be Tourism One Member Co., Ltd., said that most tourists coming to Cai Be visit the ancient village, craft village, and the newly restored floating market at Tan Phong islet, Cai Lay district, Tien Giang.
According to Mr. Le Van Y, Vice Chairman of Cai Be District People's Committee, Dong Hoa ancient house village was built before 1945 with about 10 houses with unique and distinctive architecture, bearing the mark of many historical periods. Up to now, some ancient houses have been restored and preserved and are famous tourist attractions attracting many domestic and foreign tourists.
Domestic and foreign tourists are delighted after visiting Mr. Ba Duc's ancient house.
These ancient houses are mostly located along rivers, canals, and streams. They have large areas, surrounded by fruit gardens, and small canals for irrigation in the dry season and drainage in the rainy and flood seasons.
The first two houses of Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village restored and preserved by JICA belong to Mr. Tran Tuan Kiet's house (Phu Hoa hamlet) and Mr. Phan Van Duc's house (An Loi hamlet).
Many international tourist groups come to Tien Giang to experience rowing boats on canals and streams.
In 2017, Dong Hoa Hiep ancient house village was honored to receive the National Monument Certificate and the Certificate of recognition of Dong Hoa Hiep Ancient Village Cultural - Tourism Festival as a provincial intangible cultural heritage.
Currently, there are 9 ancient houses dating from 150-220 years old and 29 houses built 80-100 years ago. In the ancient houses, there are still many sets of parallel sentences inlaid with mother-of-pearl, elaborately carved tables and chairs and many rare porcelain items, showing the luxurious and elegant hobby of wealthy families in the old South.
Many young people like to experience traveling to the West during holidays and Tet.
Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village is increasingly attracting more and more tourists to visit, research, and experience, especially international visitors. On the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2025, the ancient village welcomed 88 groups with 476 guests. Of which, there were 83 international groups with 444 guests.
During the 7-day Tet holiday of At Ty in 2025, there were over 183,126 visitors and tourists to Tien Giang, an increase of more than 25% compared to the Lunar New Year 2024. Of which, there were 20,052 international visitors, an increase of more than 25% over the same period.
