On a morning in early August, Trang Thanh Van (17 years old), a Mong student in Suoi Phai village, Tam Chung commune, Muong Lat district, took the opportunity to go to the fields. Van said that this is his daily work during every summer vacation.
A few days ago, Van's parents went to Son La province to work, leaving Van alone at home to take care of his two younger siblings and go to the fields to cut grass.
Not far from Van's house, Trang Thi My Hoa (7th grade student, Tam Chung Secondary School) helps her mother embroider and sew clothes for her siblings.
Hoa said that due to her family's difficult circumstances and not being able to travel like her friends in the lowlands, she often helps her parents with housework during the summer vacation.
Not only Van and Hoa, walking along the villages here, it is not difficult to see images of children playing and frolicking in the fields or in the streams.
Despite the rain, a student in Pu Toong village, Pu Nhi commune, Muong Lat district still carried an umbrella and herded buffalo along National Highway 15C.
After working in the fields, Trang Thi Bau (9th grade student, Tam Chung Secondary School, Muong Lat district) helps her parents wash clothes.
Funny, innocent moment of a child climbing and picking guava to eat in front of the house gate.
On summer vacation, a student in Pom Khuong village, Tam Chung commune, Muong Lat district went to the stream to bathe and catch fish.
Two girls in Suoi Tut village, Quang Chieu commune, Muong Lat district take shelter from the rain under the porch while playing.
Because their parents work all day in the fields, most children in the highlands here are self-sufficient in food and play every day.
Muong Lat is the most remote highland district of Thanh Hoa province, more than 230km west of Thanh Hoa city center. There are 6 ethnic groups living in the district, including: Thai, Mong, Kinh, Muong, Kho Mu and Dao.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Muong Lat district, said that the mountainous district has many difficulties, so during summer vacation, most students often follow their parents to the fields to work.
"During the summer, we also regularly assign teachers to help students review their lessons at home and build study corner models at home. However, very few students are able to do this, most of them follow their parents to work in the fields," said Ms. Thuy.
