During the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, the technical system of the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) did not record any cyber attacks with serious consequences.
Blocking 30 illegal websites during Tet holiday
According to information from the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications), although no cyber attacks with serious consequences were recorded, during the 9-day Lunar New Year holiday in 2025, the agency detected 105 cyber attacks, mainly in the form of Phishing - scam attacks.
During the time the whole country celebrated the New Year's holiday, the Information Security Department sent warnings and supported the handling of 15 cyber attacks; at the same time, blocked and handled 30 websites that violated the law.
In addition, on the occasion of Lunar New Year 2025, according to preliminary statistics, the technical system of the Vietnam Cyberspace Emergency Response Center - VNCERT/CC under the Information Security Department received nearly 2,600 reports of spam calls, and nearly 1,200 reports of spam messages.
Before the 2025 New Year, as the state management agency for network information security, the Ministry of Information and Communications has requested ministries, branches, localities, organizations and enterprises nationwide to synchronously deploy many measures to strengthen the security of information systems, especially during the 2025 Lunar New Year and the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The Ministry of Information and Communications has directed enterprises providing telecommunications and Internet services as well as organizations and enterprises providing digital transformation platforms to increase resources to ensure safe and smooth telecommunications and Internet infrastructure and to increase monitoring, support, and troubleshooting.
In addition, businesses are also required to deploy technical measures at the highest level to detect, filter, and prevent cyber attacks, the dissemination of malicious information, and information that violates the law on information systems and network infrastructure under their management.
3 prominent cyber attack trends this year
Referring to the trend of cyber attacks in 2025, the Vietnam Cyber Security Association stated: "APT attacks, spyware and ransomware are still the main forms of attack; meanwhile, industrial control systems, autonomous vehicles, and drones will be the new targets of hackers."
Talking to VietNamNet reporter, Mr. Nguyen Van Quan, Deputy Head of Technical Department of Vietnam Cyber Security Technology Joint Stock Company - VNCS said: Ransomware data encryption attacks; online fraud and phishing attacks; and APT targeted attacks are the 3 most prominent cyber attack trends this year.
In which, ransomware data encryption attack is a method of attack that targets users' lack of understanding or low awareness of threats, while the spread and incident handling mechanism are almost zero and the level of impact is extremely large, bringing illegal money through virtual currency, leading to hackers always being the first choice.
Online fraud and phishing attacks target people who do not have much experience or expertise in digital platforms; scammers often use images and technology to impersonate friends and relatives in order to easily steal large sums of money.
APT targeted attacks are large-scale attacks that have a major impact on large units and agencies such as governments, airlines, banks, etc. with the aim of causing paralysis, disruption, and large-scale extortion.
“With the trend of APT attacks, cyber attack groups today use many advanced attack techniques and malware along with long preparation time to ensure that the attack will definitely achieve its goals,” Mr. Nguyen Van Quan added.
Analyzing the major information security risks of individual users in 2025, VNCS experts assessed: The disclosure, eavesdropping and theft of personal information, accounts and data for the purpose of appropriation and fraud is still the biggest danger for many people.
What is worrying is that while spyware, eavesdropping and counterfeit software on smartphones are increasing, users' awareness of information security is still low.
“In that context, businesses and agencies need to pay special attention to propaganda, training and raising awareness among users about the dangers and harmful effects of attacks on digital platforms,” said a VNCS expert.
According to the National Committee on Digital Transformation, by the end of last year, the number of information systems approved for security assurance records by level had reached 92%, an increase of 27% compared to 2023; of which, 49% of information systems had deployed security assurance solutions according to approved records. Also in 2024, authorities handled 8,558 fraudulent and law-breaking websites; thanks to that, many people were protected from accessing online fraudulent and law-breaking websites. |
