The story of a young Vietnamese singer using the image of world-famous football player Lionel Messi as the background for his music video has caused a stir in public opinion in recent days.
Many people were surprised by the "courage" of the MV owner because using images of world-class figures is not easy and if not careful and unprofessional, the consequences will be very serious.
The 6-second appearance of Lionel Messi in the music video From where I was born by singer Jack (Trinh Tran Phuong Tuan) initially caused a stir in public opinion because this was the first time a star who was admired by many people, including many Vietnamese, appeared in a Vietnamese art product. The MV received nearly 6 million views after 5 days, topping the trending list on YouTube Vietnam and was at times considered Jack's successful comeback after the scandals in his personal life and work. The story was further pushed when there was information that Jack had to spend up to 60 billion VND to have Lionel Messi appear in the MV.
However, immediately, some people involved in the meeting between Messi and the male singer asked Jack to delete the MV or delete the clip containing Lionel Messi's image because the truth was completely different from the previous rumors. According to them, this was just a social meeting between fans and the famous football player. From the beginning, there was a request to only use the meeting's images for souvenir and personal purposes, not for any other popular form.
It is worth mentioning that from the time the MV was released until the related controversies broke out, the singer himself and the crew were always vague about information. It was not until the incident became serious that Jack spoke up but only gave general arguments such as "Messi's side agreed on the condition that we do not use Messi's image for commercial, political or national purposes". However, this defense also became forced when, according to copyright experts, the MV From where I was born, although not enabled for monetization on YouTube, is still considered a commercial product.
Recently, collaborations with world-famous figures in artistic products have become familiar, such as: Son Tung - MTP and Snoop Dogg; rapper Phao and rapper Tyga; Thai Vu and Lukas Forchhammer; LyLy and Vietnamese rapper R.Tee collaborating with rapper Bloo; Soobin Hoang Son and Jiyeon - T-ara group... but all are clear projects with full legal procedures. Jack's borrowing a social meeting to get the image of a celebrity to put in his product is a kind of snatching.
And the consequences of the incident not only affect Jack's career but can also negatively impact the general image of the domestic creative community, because Lionel Messi is a globally influential figure, and the unauthorized use of his image, if discovered, will cause very bad public opinion. Many Vietnamese artists are making efforts to reach out to the world, which is encouraging, but the ocean has no place for "ambiguity" and lack of professionalism.
