According to Hospital 19-8, Mr. NVB (68 years old, Hanoi) came to the hospital because of dizziness, clinical examination showed mild anemia. The patient was ordered a complete blood count test, the results were diagnosed by doctors at the Hematology - Blood Transfusion Center with anemia and mild iron deficiency.
In addition to iron transfusion, doctors also actively screen for associated diseases that can cause the condition. Fortunately, during the screening process, doctors from the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center coordinated with gastroenterologists in the hospital to perform an endoscopy of the stomach and colon under anesthesia. The results revealed a colon polyp. The patient was quickly treated for the tumor to be removed.
MSc. Dr. Do Thi Tuyet Nhung, Center for Hematology - Blood Transfusion, Hospital 19-8 said that anemia and iron deficiency are conditions in which the body does not have enough iron to produce hemoglobin, leading to a decrease in the ability to transport oxygen in the blood. Common causes include chronic blood loss due to gastrointestinal bleeding (such as peptic ulcers, colorectal cancer, hemorrhoids), genitourinary bleeding (such as uterine fibroids, menorrhagia), iron-deficient diet, reduced iron absorption due to digestive diseases, or increased iron needs in growing children and pregnant women.

Common symptoms of anemia and iron deficiency include fatigue, dizziness, pale skin, and pale mucous membranes. When anemia is detected, especially in middle-aged and elderly people, it is necessary to screen for potential causes such as colon tumors, because chronic bleeding from colon cancer can lead to anemia and iron deficiency.
The doctor also recommends that patients should not be subjective with dizziness and pale skin. When having symptoms such as dizziness and pale skin, they should go to a medical facility for a blood test. If they find anemia, even mild anemia, they should see a hematologist to find the cause and receive timely treatment.
