According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, in January 2024, the country's fruit and vegetable export turnover reached more than 490 million USD, an increase of 103.9% over the same period in 2023.

China continues to be Vietnam's largest fruit and vegetable export market with a turnover of 306 million USD, accounting for 62.45% of the country's fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first month of the year.

Compared to the same period in 2023, fruit and vegetable export turnover to China increased by 121%.

Previously, 2023 witnessed strong growth in fruit and vegetable export turnover and achieved spectacular results of 5.6 billion USD, an increase of 66.67% compared to 2022 (equivalent to an additional turnover of 2.24 billion USD).

Speaking to reporters from Customs Magazine, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), said that in the history of the fruit and vegetable industry, there has never been a year with an export turnover of 5 billion USD, let alone the figure of 5.6 billion USD like last year.

“The year with the highest turnover was 2019, which was only over 3.7 billion USD. After that, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the turnover in the following years decreased and in 2022 it only reached nearly 3.4 billion USD. In 2023, at first, the Association also only forecast the whole year's turnover to be about 4 billion USD. But the whole year's result reached 5.6 billion USD, reaching the export turnover target 2 years early (previously, the fruit and vegetable export target was 5 billion USD in 2025 - PV)", said Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen.

Regarding the prospects for fruit and vegetable exports in 2024, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen analyzed that although the world and domestic economic situation is forecast to face many difficulties, the fruit and vegetable industry has a lot of room to aim for an export turnover of more than 6 billion USD.

In addition to the impressive start in January 2024, the basis for confidence in the 6 billion USD figure is that the staple durian is forecast to have a higher output than in 2023.

“In 2024, there will be more durian growing areas ready for harvest, while demand in the largest market, China, is still very high,” said Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen.

In addition, Vietnam is also negotiating with China to have more products officially exported to this market.

Along with China, the largest export market, Vietnam also continues to promote the expansion of fruit and vegetable exports to many important markets such as the United States, EU, Australia, South Korea, Middle Eastern countries, etc.

Another important factor is that infrastructure and logistics systems are also being strongly developed in Vietnam, which will facilitate the import and export of goods in general, including the export of agricultural products.

Another important thing is that the world's consumer demand is shifting to plant-based dishes, which is also a favorable condition for the fruit and vegetable industry in 2024 and the coming years.
