Cambodia According to Lai Gia Thanh, perhaps because his arms were slack, the referee did not recognize the result of the lift, causing him to miss the opportunity to set a record in the men's 55kg weightlifting event at the 32nd SEA Games.

At the 31st SEA Games, Lai Gia Thanh won a gold medal and broke the record for clean and jerk of 148kg and total lift of 268kg. At the Games in Cambodia, he was much more skilled than his opponents, so he was sure to win a gold medal. Thanh's goal was to set a new record.

The 1998-born weightlifter led the snatch with a best lift of 121kg, just 1kg away from the SEA Games record. In the clean and jerk, he started with 140kg. Just when it seemed Thanh had successfully lifted, a referee did not recognize the result.

The Vietnamese weightlifting team appealed, and the referee asked the three judges to review the video. However, the overall verdict remained unchanged and Thanh's result was annulled, affecting his goal of breaking the record. "I think the referee did not recognize the result because his arm was loose," Thanh said. "It affected his goal of breaking the record because he lost an opportunity and the mentality of having to do it again on the second push."

After that, Gia Thanh successfully lifted 140kg, securing the gold medal while Thai weightlifter Thada Somboon-uan only reached 130kg after three lifts. In the final round, Gia Thanh raised the weight to 149kg and if he conquered it, he would continue to break the SEA Games clean and jerk record.

However, the miracle did not happen. "I think I was tired from the second push," Thanh said. "I was a bit sad because I tried so hard to overcome myself but failed."

With a total lift of 261kg, Lai Gia Thanh brought home the first weightlifting gold medal for Vietnam at the 32nd SEA Games. After him, Tran Thi My Dung competed in the women's 49kg category but failed three times to snatch 79kg and lost early.
