Quickly fix damaged signs on Da Nang highway

Many signs and signs are damaged.

The sign hanging on the gantry at Km81+420 is 1/4 peeled off and only the words "Da Nang - Quang Ngai" remain. Some signs have decals or peeling white paint so it is unclear what the sign says.

Approaching the Chu Lai toll station, many signs are also partially or completely whitened, peeling, looking very shabby.

A series of speed limit signs, exit signs... also have peeling letters and numbers, causing confusion for traffic participants.

On the way from Tam Ky city (Quang Nam) to Nghia Ky commune, Tu Nghia district (Quang Ngai), many signs are in the same situation.

At Km83 in Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province, the road sign to Chu Lai Open Economic Zone has been largely peeled off, leaving only the words "Chu Lai, National Highway 1" remaining. The remaining direction arrows and other information are missing.

The sign hanging on the gantry crane section passing through Quang Nam province is "covered in white" and it is unclear what it indicates.

Continuing on to Quang Ngai province, there are many rectangular blue signs hanging on the dragon gate frames that are also "whitened" and the letters and shapes are unclear.

Not only road signs but also many speed signs are discolored, torn or blurred and unclear, making it difficult for drivers to understand.

Many drivers who regularly travel on the route said that for many weeks these signs have been damaged and torn, making it impossible for drivers to clearly understand the speed limit or what the signs indicate.

"The sign is broken but the police's cold ticket cameras are still working normally, so if you don't pay attention or your car doesn't have support equipment, it's easy to get caught speeding. In addition, at intersections, if a stranger is driving on the route for the first time, they won't be able to exit the highway because they don't know the exit," said Mr. Xuan Truong, a tourist car driver.

Mobilize many construction teams to focus on overcoming

Confirming the above damages, a representative of the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway Operation Center said that they had reported to the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) for information and a plan to fix them.

Specifically, on the route, there are 19 signs and signs with peeling reflective film that VEC has repaired, including: signs prohibiting toxic chemicals; signs prohibiting right turns; signs indicating speed 60; auxiliary exit signs... and installing 3 additional exit auxiliary signs.

The work of repairing damaged signs and direction signs is being focused on by the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway Operation Center.

Currently, VEC has decided to repair the damage and separate some damaged signs that greatly affect traffic safety of the project such as speed signs, signs indicating entrances and exits at intersections to be implemented first, expected to be completed in June 2024.

Previously, on June 4, VEC issued Official Letter 1427, regarding the policy of repairing damaged signs on the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway, agreeing to repair some damaged signs. At the same time, requesting the Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway Operation Center to remove damaged signs that VEC agreed to repair, urgently gather equipment and materials to organize the implementation of the construction and complete before June 20.

Records on the route show that, along the damaged sign locations, workers are actively dismantling and organizing repairs. Many construction teams are deployed, on the road workers arrange warning devices and proceed to remove damaged signs. Some other construction teams are dismantling and repairing signs with peeling reflective screens, re-sticking speed signs, etc.

A representative of the Da Nang – Quang Ngai Expressway Operation Center said that the repair work is being carried out urgently and seriously to ensure traffic safety on the route as well as guide traffic participants to enter and exit the expressway properly.

The unit is currently working hard to complete the repair of minor damages in June. For major damages, it takes time because according to regulations, bid packages with capital of over 500 million must comply with legal regulations, so it takes time to implement such as submitting for appraisal and approval of technical economic reports...

It is known that previously in 2022, VEC also arranged funds to repair 33 damaged signs and in 2023 it was 143 signs.

The Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway project is over 139 km long, passing through Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai, and was started in 2013 with an investment capital of over VND34,000 billion. In 2018, the project was completed and put into operation.
