Today’s vehicles contain more than 100 million lines of code, pushing the limits of hardware capabilities to create an unprecedented combination of infotainment, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and computing power. Future in-vehicle computing systems are evolving to become more centralized, with more features being software-defined and more data shared among fewer engine control units (ECUs). As a result, backhaul connections will need to be faster than ever, reaching multi-gigabit per second.

In response, the market has created new Automotive Ethernet standards, with IEEE 802.3cz being the highest multi-gigabit data rate standard. Released in 2023, the standard supports speeds up to 50 Gb/s over glass fiber, and sets physical layer requirements and management parameters for speeds of 2.5, 5, 10, 25, and 50 Gb/s in automotive environments. The standard is designed to meet the needs of modern in-vehicle networking platforms.
The newly developed TDFOM signal measurement and analysis metric represents a major step forward in assessing the quality of multi-gigabit optical signals in glass fiber transmission. As defined in IEEE 802.3cz, TDFOM measurements use a reference receiver to model a typical integrated circuit (IC) implementation, ensuring transmitter interoperability through signal integrity verification. These metrics are essential for calibrating reference transmitters and enabling accurate compliance testing of optical receivers.
“With this agreement, we have taken a major step forward in providing OEMs with the ability to validate optical communications products according to IEEE Std 802.3cz,” said Rubén Pérez-Aranda, CTO and co-founder of KD. “Keysight and KD have collaborated within IEEE 802.3 to define the metrics and assurance criteria for the new Ethernet communications standard, which meets the quality requirements required by the automotive industry.”
Thomas Goetzel, vice president and general manager of Keysight's Automotive and Energy Solutions , highlighted the significance of the agreement: "Automotive Ethernet technologies have matured and are reaping significant benefits from fiber technologies that enable multi-gigabit in-vehicle networking. Our innovative testbeds and instrumentation, combined with KD's expertise in optical measurement, will help customers explore reliable high-speed links in in-vehicle networks."
