Messaging app KakaoTalk continues to hold the No. 1 spot in South Korea, closely followed by streaming platform YouTube and photo-sharing app Instagram.
The latest survey results released by the Korea Press Foundation have revealed the "names" that are "making waves" in the social networking market of the "land of kimchi."
Messaging app KakaoTalk continues to hold the No. 1 spot, closely followed by streaming platform YouTube and photo-sharing app Instagram.
The survey, conducted between October and November 2024 on 3,000 people aged 19 and above, found that KakaoTalk was the most widely used platform with a user rate of 98.9%. YouTube came in second with 84.9%, followed by Instagram with 38.6%.
Two other domestic platforms, Band and Naver's Blog, ranked fourth and fifth with 28.6% and 21.7%, respectively.
Across all age groups, KakaoTalk and YouTube remain the two "invincible" names.
However, the third place has a noticeable difference between age groups. While Instagram "dominates" young people in their 20s, 30s and 40s (with usage rates of 80.9%, 70.7% and 47.5% respectively), Naver's Band is popular with middle-aged and elderly users in their 50s and 60s (with rates of 40.6% and 31.1% respectively).
Another notable point the survey pointed out was the difference in usage between platforms.
Instagram and Facebook are primarily used to communicate with friends and acquaintances, while YouTube and other video services are more popular for viewing content from influencers and celebrities.
The survey also looked at social media news consumption habits. Alarmingly, 31.6% of respondents said they did not know the source of the information they read on social media, and more than 45% admitted to never verifying the source of the news.
Only 22.5% of respondents said they verified news sources, with young people tending to check information more thoroughly than older people./.
