“We are not trying to make machines like humans,” Jack Ma said in a speech to employees at Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou on April 10. “We are trying to make them understand humans, think like us, and do things we cannot do yet.”
As one of the first figures in China to speak out strongly in support of AI, Jack Ma believes that artificial intelligence should not replace humans but rather meet all human needs. “The responsibility of technology people is to ensure that AI understands and supports humans,” he said.
Jack Ma's statement comes as Alibaba is making a strong shift towards AI. From a giant e-commerce empire in China, the group has focused on developing AI. Notably, the large language model (LLM) line called Qwen.
This is Alibaba's flagship product in the global race with names like OpenAI in the US and Deepseek in China. Qwen has received many positive reviews, helping Alibaba gradually regain its position after a long period of instability, according to Bloomberg.
In February, Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said the company’s top goal right now is artificial general intelligence (AGI), which refers to AI systems that can achieve intelligence at a level comparable to or exceeding that of humans.
The shift to AI is also seen as a strategic move to help Alibaba recover from the turbulent past few years. From late 2020 until recently, he had largely disappeared from public view.
In February, he joined other prominent businessmen in a high-level meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss new technologies and innovation.
Speaking to all Alibaba employees during his return, Jack Ma said: “Technology is not just about conquering the stars or the ocean. Technology is also about keeping the fire in each of us alive.”
