Currently, the highest tuition fee to study medicine at a public school in Vietnam is over 80 million VND/year and at a private school it is up to 180 million VND/year. Tuition fees for medical training are determined to be the highest among all majors.
Dentistry currently has the highest tuition fees in the medical field at many schools.
Tuition for medical training, highest 183 million VND/year
Tuition fees for medical and pharmaceutical majors are currently collected at many levels, the highest of which are for medicine (training general practitioners) and dentistry (training dentists).
Among them, the public university training in health sciences with the highest tuition fees is the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City, with 2 medical training majors having tuition fees of over 80 million VND/year. Specifically, the dental-maxillofacial major charges 84.7 million VND/year and the medical major charges 82.2 million VND/year. Next, the University of Health Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University) charges 60 million VND/year for the medical major and 55.2 million VND/year for other medical training majors.
Meanwhile, some other public schools apply lower tuition fees. Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine has 3 majors (medicine, pharmacy, dentistry) with the same tuition fee of 55.2 million VND/year. At Hanoi Medical University, the medical major has a tuition fee of 55.2 million VND/year. At the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hanoi National University), the major with the highest tuition fee is also medicine with 55 million VND/year. Meanwhile, Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy applies a tuition fee of over 49 million VND/year for 3 majors: pharmacy, medicine and dentistry. The medical major of Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy only charges 30 million VND/year...
Private universities also have the highest tuition fees for the two majors of dentistry and medicine. Nguyen Tat Thanh University leads the group of private schools with a tuition fee of 183 million VND/year (dentistry) and 152 million VND/year (medicine). Next, the tuition fee for the two majors at Hong Bang International University is 180 million VND/year. Some other schools also have high tuition fees such as Duy Tan University with a tuition fee of 98.88 million VND/year (dentistry) and 94.4 million VND/year (medicine); Tan Tao University with a tuition fee of 150 million VND/year for medicine, etc.
Tuition fees for medical and pharmaceutical majors for the 2024-2025 academic year
There are medical schools with tuition fees 5 times higher than other schools.
Tuition fees of public universities are currently regulated in Decree 97 of the Government on amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree 81/2021 regulating the mechanism for collecting and managing tuition fees for educational institutions in the national education system and policies on tuition exemption, reduction, support for learning costs; service prices in the field of education and training.
According to the tuition fees announced for the 2024-2025 school year, non-autonomous schools can collect a maximum of VND27.6 million/year (10 months); schools that ensure regular expenditures can collect a maximum of VND55.2 million/year; schools that are autonomous in regular expenditures and investment expenditures can collect up to VND69 million/year. Not to mention, with quality-accredited programs, universities can determine their own tuition fees based on technical and economic norms issued by the school.
Based on the maximum ceiling for the 2024-2025 school year stipulated in Decree 97, tuition fees for the medical and pharmaceutical sector are currently the highest among the seven university training sectors. Specifically, in the group of public schools that are not yet autonomous, the medical and pharmaceutical sector is allowed to collect a maximum of VND 27.6 million/year - twice as high as the sector with the lowest fee, which is art. In the group of public schools that are autonomous in regular spending, the medical and pharmaceutical sector is allowed to collect VND 55.2 million/year while the art sector is allowed to collect VND 27 million/year. In the group of schools that are autonomous in both regular and investment spending, the medical and pharmaceutical sector collects VND 69 million/year and the art sector collects VND 33.75 million/year.
Tuition fees increased tenfold after 10 years
The highest tuition fee for public universities training in medicine and pharmacy has increased more than ten times compared to the 2014-2015 school year. Specifically, according to Decree 49 of the Government regulating tuition exemption and reduction, support for learning costs and the mechanism for collecting and using tuition fees for educational institutions in the national education system from the 2010-2011 school year to the 2014-2015 school year, the maximum tuition fee ceiling for the medicine and pharmacy sector in the 2014-2015 school year is only 800,000 VND/month (equivalent to 8 million VND/10-month school year).
Comparing tuition fees for the medical and pharmaceutical sector with other sectors in private universities also shows a similar difference. For example, at Duy Tan University, the tuition fee for dentistry is nearly 99 million VND/year - more than 4 times higher than many other sectors at the school, which only charge 22-23 million VND/year.
Similarly, in 2024, Hong Bang International University announced tuition fees for undergraduate training programs ranging from 35-180 million VND/year. Of which, the tuition fees for the two majors of medical doctors and dentistry are more than 5 times higher than the public health major, and more than 4 times higher than many other majors at the school...
