On July 30, the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center (Quang Nam province) - the unit that carried out the restoration of the Japanese Covered Bridge relic, whitewashed part of the bridge after the restoration.
Accordingly, workers continued to whitewash the side of the Japanese Covered Bridge which had been previously whitewashed.
The side of the Japanese Covered Bridge continues to be whitewashed for the second time.
Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc, Director of Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation Center, said that this is a whitewashing process using many layers, and is currently being whitewashed for the second layer, but the color has not changed. The main colored part of the work has been completed and will not be whitewashed again.
Previously, on July 25, after nearly 20 months of restoration, the entire iron frame and corrugated iron roof covering the bridge pagoda was dismantled.
The new look of the Japanese Covered Bridge after restoration has received mixed opinions about its fresh paint color. Many people believe that this paint color takes away the ancient, mossy beauty of the structure that is the heart of Hoi An ancient town.
The Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Preservation Center said that the restoration always ensures to retain as much of the existing and authentic physical traces containing the historical and cultural values of the Japanese Covered Bridge relic. Thereby, preserving intact the architectural and artistic values that have created the symbolic image of Hoi An.
The main color part of the completed project will not be painted with additional color.
Restoration activities are carried out with a scientific approach in calculating intervention solutions, based on complete, authentic research and objective, comprehensive assessments of the monument.
In addition, the restoration of the Chua Cau relic is considered in its entirety, inseparable from the restoration of the architectural components of the relic and the beautification of the surrounding landscape. Unnecessary intervention is minimized, avoiding changes to the basic features that create the values of the relic...
It is known that the project to restore the Chua Cau relic has a total investment of more than 20.2 billion VND. Of which, the Quang Nam provincial budget supports 50%, and the Hoi An city budget arranges 50%.
The project is invested by Hoi An City People's Committee, implemented by Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center, and the Monuments Conservation Consulting Center - Monuments Conservation Institute is the consulting unit.
The restoration project of the Japanese Covered Bridge is expected to be inaugurated on August 3.
