In the feudal history of Vietnam, there was a glorious, golden period opened by the Ly Dynasty. Lasting 216 years (from 1009 to 1225), through 9 kings, the Ly Dynasty recorded beautiful pages of history, leaving a deep impression with many correct and reasonable policies and great achievements in many fields: economy, politics, military, diplomacy, culture, laying the foundation to build the country into an independent, unified and prosperous nation.

In the book's Preface, Professor Vu Ngoc Khanh shared: Readers may wonder why this book only introduces eight of the Ly Dynasty's nine kings. That's because at the end of the Ly Dynasty, there was the last king, Ly Chieu Hoang, but because she only reigned for two years and then abdicated, giving the throne to her husband, then married someone else and changed her family name, history cannot classify her as the other emperors.

In this book, information about each king of the Ly dynasty is introduced very concisely but still clearly shows the merits, career, and influence of each. The move of the capital from Hoa Lu to Thang Long by King Ly Thai To - Ly Cong Uan was a decision that has been recorded in history books, leaving an eternal reputation for the emperor who founded the Ly dynasty. Under the Ly dynasty, the country was peaceful and prosperous, with extremely brilliant achievements in fighting foreign invaders. The glorious victories of the Ly dynasty repelled the plot to annex our country by the Northern and Southern invaders, and the battle on the Nhu Nguyet River in the spring of 1077 defeated the Song army with the appearance of the divine poem "Nam Quoc Son Ha" by Thai Uy Ly Thuong Kiet, which is considered the first declaration of independence of the country, a beautiful page of history written by the Ly dynasty. The policy of “nhu vien” (marrying princesses to the governors and chieftains in the border areas) and thereby attracting and subduing them, contributing to protecting and maintaining the integrity of the country’s territory was also considered a policy of national unity, an achievement in the Ly Dynasty’s governance of the country. In addition, the achievements in literature, art, religion, architecture, and the appearance of many famous civil and military mandarins were also profound marks left by the Ly Dynasty.

A special point that makes the book more attractive and rich, and the careers and achievements of the kings become clearer, is the supplementary documents (adding to the shortcomings) behind the information about each emperor, including stories and pages about characters closely related to the kings. Because according to Professor Vu Ngoc Khanh, knowing about King Ly Thai To without knowing about monk Van Hanh, knowing about King Ly Thanh Tong without knowing about Lady Y Lan, knowing about King Ly Than Tong without knowing about Tu Dao Hanh... is really a shortcoming.

In general, each king in the Ly Bat De period contributed to the Ly dynasty and the Vietnamese people. Understanding their merits and contributions is necessary, a form of gratitude and also a necessary attitude towards the glorious history of the country and people.

The documents provided in the book were carefully collected by Professor Vu Ngoc Khanh, presented with talented writing style, and will provide readers with a reference channel to learn more deeply about the Ly Dynasty and the Ly Dynasty kings.
