Blood donation is a small act but it creates big changes when hope and life are given. Thousands of patients have the chance to be saved thanks to timely blood transfusion.
About 80,000 units of blood are needed during Tet At Ty.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Que - Director of the National Blood Center, National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion said that to prepare for the blood reserve at the end of the year and the upcoming Lunar New Year 2025, the Institute expects to need about 80,000 units of blood in December 2024 and January 2025. Of which, blood group O needs about 50% of the total blood volume.
Thanks to the attention and participation of the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at all levels, units and the organization of events such as Red Sunday, Pink Spring Festival, etc., the Institute as well as other Blood Centers currently have enough plans to receive blood until February 2025 to ensure demand.
According to the Director of the National Blood Center, the demand for blood is usually stable, blood is needed every day and every hour for emergency and treatment. However, because it depends on the patient, the demand can increase very high before and after Tet. On average, the Institute needs about 9,500 units of blood per week, but the upcoming Tet holiday can increase to 10,000 - 10,500 units.
“The reason for this increase is that patients often need blood transfusions before Tet to have enough health to celebrate Tet with their families and will return to hospitals en masse after the long Tet holiday. Hospitals also need to reserve more blood to meet the demand for emergency and treatment readiness during the Tet holiday which lasts up to 9 days,” Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Que explained.
With the weather in the North being extremely cold, affecting blood collection, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion hopes that people will try to arrange time to donate blood at fixed blood donation points from mid-January 2025 onwards.
The Institute will also open to receive blood, especially platelets, on all days during Tet, including the 30th of Tet, or the 1st and 2nd of Tet, because platelet preparations can only be preserved and stored for a maximum of 5 days.
Hearts for the community
Listening to the call of the community, with the spirit of spreading love to give life, in the early cold winter days, many people have taken the time to donate blood as a practical action to help those in need.
Promoting the spirit of responsibility to the community and society, volunteers, children of Tan Yen district (Bac Giang province) living and studying in Hanoi participated in donating blood during the cold weekend.
In the green volunteer shirt, student Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao - Vietnam Women's Academy both donated blood and supported blood donors.
“Having donated blood to patients twice, I feel that donating blood is a meaningful thing, and also brings benefits to myself when I get free health check-ups.
Donating blood is the simplest and easiest thing to do. I hope all students will love and enthusiastically respond to this action. It can be seen that all volunteer activities come from the heart to spread positive things" - Thanh Thao emotionally shared.
As a volunteer who has always had a special affection for blood donation, student Nguyen Truong Linh (University of Transport) was present at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion early to register for blood donation. Linh has donated blood 6 times and also donated blood at previous programs.
Linh shared that no matter how cold and harsh the weather is, it cannot stop the spirit of volunteering to donate blood for the community of young people today, especially in the conditions where patients as well as the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion are in need of blood.
For a long time, Ms. Le Thi Vinh (Thuong Tin, Hanoi) considered blood donation an indispensable habit. Every time she donates blood, she feels that life has more meaning, she can help many people even if they are strangers.
Normally, when the time comes, Ms. Vinh does not mind the long distance and rides her motorbike more than 30km from home to the Institute to donate blood and platelets. Every time she receives a familiar call from the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion inviting her to donate phenotype-compatible blood (compatible with the red blood cell blood group antigen) for a patient in need, Ms. Vinh arranges her work to go to the Institute to carry out this noble task, despite heavy rain and strong winds.
To date, Ms. Vinh has donated blood more than 30 times, of which, in 2024, she donated phenotype-compatible blood 3 times as mobilized by the Institute. With compassionate people like Ms. Le Thi Vinh, the journey to find units of phenotype-compatible blood for patients becomes easier.
“Every time I hear the Institute call, I go to donate blood” – that is the special mission of Ms. Pham Anh Ngoc (25 years old, Hanoi) with 16 times donating rare blood type (Rh(D) negative blood). As a person with rare blood type, Ms. Ngoc is always aware that she must take care of her health, because she has the responsibility to help patients in need of rare blood.
Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and people who are always ready to donate blood whenever the Institute needs it, thousands of patients have the opportunity and hope to be saved thanks to timely blood transfusions.
