The CMA CGM Group, with more than 160,000 employees in 160 countries with more than 650 vessels, connects 400 ports across five continents.
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on December 19, the leader of this shipping company said that the 100% battery-powered electric barge will operate on the inland waterway from Binh Duong province to Gemalink deep-water port, where CMA CGM owns 25% of the shares.
With each round trip of 180km, this barge not only ensures efficient cargo transport but also contributes to reducing 778 tons of CO2 per year.
This 100% electric floor is quite special. The product was designed by the R&D team of CMA CGM in cooperation with the world's leading battery manufacturer, CATL.
The barge is also certified to use 100% renewable energy and has the capacity to transport 50,000 TEUs per year. It is expected to officially go into operation from 2026.
A highlight of the project is the collaboration between CMA CGM and Nike. The leading sportswear brand has committed to using electric barges to transport goods from Binh Duong to Gemalink, contributing to optimizing the green supply chain.
To support the operation of the electric barges, Gemalink Port will deploy a solar power system that will produce 1 GWh of renewable energy per year. This electricity will not only power the charging stations but also contribute to CMA CGM’s long-term goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
The project not only boosts the local economy but also creates a sustainable legacy. Through human resource training and green technology development, CMA CGM is contributing to enhancing Vietnam’s competitiveness in the fields of renewable energy and sustainable logistics.
At the same time, the project also lays the foundation for replicating this model in other countries, promoting green transformation globally.
Previously, on November 19, Mr. Mathieu Friedberg, senior vice president of the French shipping and logistics group CMA-CGM, proposed to Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha a project to deploy electric barges, which will initially operate on inland waterways in Vietnam.
The Group is operating 4 shipping lines, serving 6 international seaports in Vietnam, with 15 international voyages to Europe, the United States, and a number of service routes connecting to the ports.
