Specifically, the Korean Ministry of Justice said it will use the UK's QS World University Rankings and the US's Best Global Universities Rankings to evaluate visa applicants under the Top-tier Visa System.
This means that candidates graduating from the world's Top 100 universities will have a big advantage.
The move is part of the South Korean government's efforts to attract foreign technology experts, especially in key areas such as semiconductors, displays, secondary batteries, biotechnology, robotics and defense.
This priority visa system offers many privileges in terms of time and issuance process, making it easier for highly skilled professionals to come to work and live in Korea.
The “gold” criteria for tech talent include 8 years of experience in designated industry sectors; a degree from one of the world’s top 100 universities; at least 3 years of experience working at one of the world’s top 500 companies (as assessed by Forbes Global 2000, Fortune Global 500 and TIME 100 Most Influential Companies).
Those who meet the above criteria will be granted an F-2 visa, allowing them to work in Korea for 3 years before being eligible to apply for permanent residency. Their family members also enjoy similar benefits and are allowed to work freely in a variety of industries.
Not only experienced talents, Korea also "rolls out the red carpet" to welcome young scientists and engineers. The government of this country will issue D-10 visas to those with advanced degrees from one of the top 100 science universities, allowing them to have 2 years to search and prepare for job opportunities in Korea.
In addition, to promote cultural exchange and attract foreign workers, Korea will introduce the Youth Dream visa, which allows young citizens of friendly countries to come for vocational training, internships and job hunting.
With these policies, South Korea hopes to increase the competitiveness of domestic companies while addressing the shortage of skilled labor due to population decline and aging.
