Two 'blockbuster' games are safe after EA's massive layoffs

According to Gaming Bolt , despite gradually stepping away from developing licensed IPs in the future, EA confirmed work is still underway on upcoming Marvel single-player titles.

EA recently announced a series of layoffs, with plans to cut around 670 employees, or around 5% of its total workforce. The company said that as part of its restructuring, it was looking to move away from developing games based on licensed IP, but with several of EA's upcoming titles falling into this category, this has left many questioning their status.

However, at least two of them have been confirmed to be safe. In a statement to GamesIndustry, an EA representative confirmed that their two upcoming Marvel games based on Iron Man and Black Panther are still in development.

Iron Man is being developed at Motive Studio, the team behind the 2023 Dead Space remake, as a third-person single-player action-adventure game. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game is currently in pre-production, and job listings suggest it could have an open-world setting.

Meanwhile, Black Panther is being developed by Cliffhanger Games, a newly formed studio, and will be an open-world third-person action-adventure single-player title.

Previous reports have suggested that EA's partnership with Marvel will also result in a third game, although the identity of that game remains a mystery. However, not all of EA's upcoming titles based on licensed IP have survived. Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars first-person shooter has been canceled. Meanwhile, Battlefield studio Ridgeline Games has been shuttered.
