2024: Import-export turnover of Ho Chi Minh City Customs reaches 133.6 billion USD

On the afternoon of January 2, at the summary meeting of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs sector in 2024 and the setting of tasks for 2025, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Tuan - Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department - said that in a year when the world economy was full of fluctuations, global trade activities suffered disruptions in the supply chain and increased transportation costs, Vietnam's import-export industry was affected a lot.

Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department, with a workload accounting for 45% of turnover, 35% of state budget revenue and 1/3 of the industry, and being the largest customs unit in the country, has encountered many difficulties in performing the task of collecting state budget.

However, by the end of 2024, the import-export turnover of this unit still reached 133.6 billion USD, contributing 132,030 billion VND to the state budget, reaching 195% of the set target. Customs inspection and supervision work is carried out with a goods inspection rate of only 0.95%, helping to shorten the time for procedures and increase the efficiency of trade activities.

This result helped the City Customs Department collect 1% more budget revenue than the assigned target, with an absolute figure of 1,239 billion VND.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Tuan, this was achieved because last year, the connection between customs and businesses was effectively implemented through conferences and dialogues to disseminate legal knowledge in the customs field as well as support businesses to create a favorable investment and business environment.

Promote economic development

"Ho Chi Minh City Customs is committed to continuing to improve the business investment environment and enhance competitiveness, and considers this vital and extremely important to determine sustainable growth and effective competition of the economy," affirmed the Director of the City Customs Department.

Sharing more about the spectacular budget collection results exceeding the target of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Van Dung said that the city leaders themselves were surprised and highly appreciated the implementation efforts.

Because in the meeting about a month before, both the Tax Department and the City Customs Department had difficulty with budget collection. Meanwhile, the task of collecting land use tax had not been completed due to problems with land valuation.

"However, by the end of 2024, Ho Chi Minh City's state budget revenue was VND505,344 billion, reaching 104.66% of the estimate. This is also the first year in history that the city's budget revenue has reached VND500,000 billion, becoming the first and only locality to date.

This achievement reflects the great efforts and determination of the business community in implementing tasks, management and policies...", said the city vice chairman.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, in 2025, Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department needs to focus on 4 main goals.

Specifically, the industry continues to improve the business environment and enhance national competitiveness in the spirit of Resolution 98 of the Government, including piloting specific mechanisms and policies to turn Ho Chi Minh City into a leading administrative and technological center. Finally, strive to complete the budget revenue target of VND 130,000 billion, contributing to the total budget revenue target of Ho Chi Minh City.

City leaders also said that in 2025, Ho Chi Minh City aims for economic growth of 7.5% to 8%.

On this occasion, the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department honored 37 outstanding enterprises and business associations for their efforts and determination in implementing state laws on customs and making great contributions to budget obligations.

These are typical enterprises, representing a dynamic and creative business community, contributing not only to import-export activities but also to the overall development of the city.
