TP HCM Ha Tinh surprisingly defeated TP HCM 1-0 right at Thong Nhat Stadium, to make the first victory in V-League since June.
Since the 2-1 victory over Binh Dinh on June 4 in round 11 of the V-League last season, Ha Tinh has not won in 17 consecutive matches. In the 2023-2024 season alone, they have drawn three and lost four after seven rounds and are second to last. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City is in good form under new coach Phung Thanh Phuong, remaining unbeaten in the last four matches, earning eight points.
However, at Thong Nhat Stadium tonight, Ho Chi Minh City FC appeared to be stuck against the visitors. Despite controlling the ball 58% of the time, the home team only had one shot in the entire match and it was not on target. Ha Tinh did not attack much, but had more dangerous opportunities.
In the 4th minute, from a corner kick on the right wing, Bruno Almeida bravely headed the ball hard but goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang made a brilliant reflex save. At the beginning of the second half, Stephen Gopey got the ball in the penalty area after a counter-attack, then turned and shot from the left wing, sending the ball wide of the post.
In the 67th minute, Ha Tinh continued to attack freely on the left wing. The ball was hung to the far post for Tran Dinh Tien to tap the ball in close to the goal, opening the score. Immediately after that, Ho Chi Minh City FC had a chance to equalize from a corner kick on the right wing, but Lucas Brendon was surprised and tapped the ball over the bar.
In the following minutes, coach Phung Thanh Phuong used all his substitutions to refresh the attack, but could not penetrate the visitors' dense defense, accepting a final 0-1 defeat.
The home defeat caused Ho Chi Minh City FC to drop one place to sixth with 12 points and could fall further if Hai Phong and Hanoi FC win tomorrow, December 27. Meanwhile, Ha Tinh has six points to climb to 12th.
After round 8, the Night Wolf V-League 2023-2024 will take a two-month break to make room for the Vietnamese team to focus on the Asian Cup. When the tournament returns for round 9, Ha Tinh will return home to host the bottom team HAGL, while Ho Chi Minh City will visit defending champion Cong An Ha Noi on February 18.
