On June 18, Mr. Bui Van Sang, Chairman of Thanh Oai District People's Committee (Hanoi) said that regarding the "horrifying experience" at the summer retreat at Cu Da Pagoda (Cu Khe Commune, Thanh Oai), Ms. Dieu Tinh Thu had written a letter of repentance and apology to the parties involved.
Cu Da Pagoda is the place where the noise happened related to the retreat for children.
According to Ms. Thu's letter, from June 12 to 16, Ms. Thu supported the summer retreat at Cu Da Pagoda. At 11:00 a.m. on June 15, at Tam Thien's family's house, CHP (11 years old, Tan Trieu commune, Thanh Tri district) reported that he had a sore arm. When asking the department in charge, Ms. Thu received information that P. had a sore arm due to a fall. After that, Ms. Thu sent someone to take P. to the hospital for an X-ray.
When the results of the examination and test were normal, Ms. Thu was subjective and negligent in not informing the family about the incident. On June 16, when all the children had returned to the retreat, Ms. Thu received a phone call from the family informing her that P.'s hand was injured because he was beaten by a classmate from another class.
After investigating, Ms. Thu determined that P. had a conflict with a friend in Tuoi Tre class and the two sides fought. When the incident happened, the "leader and deputy leader" kept the information from Ms. Thu for fear of being expelled and not allowed to continue participating in the retreat.
Suspend unqualified retreats
The leader of the Hanoi City Religious Committee said that the Committee has worked with the Thanh Oai District Buddhist Sangha about the case of a parent reporting that her child was beaten during a summer retreat at Cu Da Pagoda. The Hanoi Religious Committee has also requested that districts compile a list of retreats to be held in the summer of 2023. If the pagoda does not meet the conditions, the retreats will be temporarily suspended.
Meanwhile, Ms. Pham Thi Luong Duyen, Vice Chairwoman of Cu Khe Commune People's Committee, said that after receiving the information, the commune organized a team to inspect the facilities at Cu Da Pagoda. Thereby, all the retreats had a list of registered children, and the facilities at the pagoda were basically guaranteed. However, when the second retreat took place, the locality had power and water cut off, which also affected the children's daily activities.
On the evening of June 17, a parent named NTGN - who posted on social media about his child participating in the summer retreat at Cu Da Pagoda - said that he had met with the abbot of Cu Da Pagoda as well as a representative of the Organizing Committee of the retreat. Thereby, the two sides agreed on the contents of an apology to the student's family, and at the same time, the Organizing Committee returned all the expenses for the recent retreat.
Previously, this parent posted on social media about his 11-year-old son being beaten by a friend at a retreat at Cu Da Pagoda, causing an arm injury.
According to this parent, her son attended a 5-day retreat (June 12-16) at the temple through a Buddhist. When the retreat ended, when she came to pick up her son, she saw that he was still wearing the same shirt from the day he arrived, his face was dirty, and his arms and legs had many mosquito bites. Her son said he was beaten with a wooden chair by his friends, was not allowed to bathe, the toilet was dirty, and he had to sleep on the ground. When he returned home, he complained of pain, had difficulty moving his arms, and was in a state of panic. Her family took him for an X-ray on June 16 at Thien Duc International General Hospital, and it was concluded that he had no broken bones but soft tissue injuries.
