Google announced on January 28 that it will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America" for users in the United States after the name was officially updated in the US geographic names directory system.
Google, the technology company that owns and operates Google Maps, posted on social network X that it has long had a "policy of changing names when they are updated by official government sources."
This change will only appear to users in the US, but it will still be called “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico. Outside the US and Mexico, Google Maps users will be able to see both names displayed.
Last week, the US Department of the Interior said it had officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America."
Accordingly, the US Board on Geographic Names is working quickly to update the names of these entities in the US Geographic Names Information System.
Federal officials also announced that the name of North America's tallest peak - Denali in Alaska - has been changed to Mount McKinley.
On December 22, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced that he would change the name of the tallest mountain in the United States back to its original name, Mount McKinley.
Mr. Trump ordered the renaming of many places when signing executive orders just hours after taking office for his second term on January 20, fulfilling his campaign pledge.
"At the direction of the President, the Gulf of Mexico will officially be known as the Gulf of America and the highest peak in North America will once again bear the name Mount McKinley," the US Department of the Interior said in a statement released last week.
Google announced that it will also change the name of Denali back to "Mount McKinley" on Google Maps.
