In an effort to delve deeper into the field of extended reality (XR), Google has just launched the Android XR operating system designed for use in a series of smart devices. This is an ambitious project with the cooperation of Samsung Group (Korea).
Not just stopping at phones, tablets or smartwatches, Android XR will be the foundation for a series of XR devices, from traditional augmented reality glasses to screenless “AI glasses” launched in 2025. The highlight of Android XR is the deep integration with the Gemini virtual assistant.
Gemini is designed to interact with users naturally through voice, making it easy to control the operating system and applications. Google believes Gemini is the “breakthrough application” that will help XR become more popular.
Android XR will launch first on headsets that will change the way people see, work, and explore. With a headset, users can easily transition from being fully immersed in a virtual environment with apps, digital content, and virtual assistants to the real world. Additionally, the Android XR release is a preview for developers so they can start building games and apps for other devices.
Google also plans to start testing prototype glasses running Android XR with a small group of users soon. Gemini in the glasses will support tasks like directions and language translation. Later, Google will also tweak popular apps like YouTube, Photos, Maps, and Google TV to give users an immersive experience using Android XR.
Earlier this week, Google also announced Gemini 2.0, its most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) model to date, as many corporations race to lead the way in this rapidly evolving technology.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the new model will mark a "new human era" in AI development, with AI models designed to understand and make decisions about the world around them.
"AI Agent" is the latest trend in Silicon Valley, capable of understanding goals, helping users plan, research topics, and guide them through tasks. AI Agent can learn, decide, and respond based on data and pre-set goals.
