The company was founded in 2021 by two former OpenAI executives, Dario Amodei and his sister Daniela Amodei. Several former OpenAI researchers also joined Anthropic's founding team. Anthropic was valued at $4.1 billion in early 2023. In April, Google invested $300 million in Anthropic and took a 10% stake.

In addition to Google, Anthropic also received funding from Salesforce and Zoom

Anthropic is the company behind ChatGPT’s rival chatbot, Claude 2. Claude 2 can summarize text of up to about 75,000 words, about the length of a book. Users can input large data sets and have the chatbot summarize them in the form of a memo, letter, or story. ChatGPT, meanwhile, can only handle about 3,000 words.

In July, Daniela Amodei said Anthropic spent at least two months developing its latest chatbot, with a team of 30 to 35 people working directly on the AI model and a total of 150 people supporting it.

According to research by machine learning monitoring platform Arthur AI, Claude 2 is the most reliable chatbot in terms of self-awareness, meaning its ability to accurately assess what it knows and doesn't know. Additionally, Claude 2 only answers questions for which it has training data.

Anthropic was also among four companies invited to a White House meeting to discuss responsible AI development with Vice President Kamala Harris. Anthropic then raised $450 million in May.

Previously, Amazon also invested $4 billion in Anthropic to compete in AI development. The increasing investment shows that cloud computing companies are trying to ensure cooperative relationships with AI startups in the context of AI being a new trend in the technology industry. According to some experts, in the future, AI companies will be an important customer group of cloud computing "giants".
