The warning comes amid a growing threat from artificial intelligence (AI)-driven hacking techniques, with some 2.5 billion Gmail accounts at risk of being hacked. Experts are urging users to be aware of these new threats and take steps to protect themselves.
Hackers are reportedly using AI to target Gmail users. They impersonate Google support staff to trick victims into revealing sensitive information. Typically, these attackers will call users and tell them that their Gmail accounts have been compromised, creating panic by claiming that personal data is at risk.
They then ask the victim to provide an account recovery code under the pretext of recovering the customer's account. When the victim shares the code, the hacker takes control of the Gmail account, leading to serious consequences such as identity theft and data loss.
Steps to protect your Gmail account
To protect your Gmail account, Google recommends that you never share your recovery code with anyone, even if they claim to be a Google support agent. You should also enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for added security.
Google emphasizes that enabling 2FA is one of the most effective ways to protect your account. Even if a hacker gets your password, they won't be able to log in without a second step of verification.
In case you accidentally provided the recovery code, quickly take the following steps to protect your account:
- Change your password: Go to Settings on your Android device, select Google , and select your Google account. Click Manage your Google account > select the Security tab. Under How to sign in, select Password to change your password to a secure one.
- Reset Password: If you cannot access your account, select Forgot my password and answer the security questions to reset your password.
By enabling 2FA and taking the above steps, users will create an important layer of protection for their Gmail accounts, thereby minimizing the risk of becoming victims of AI-driven hacks and protecting their personal information.
