According to a report from research firm Counterpoint, global smartphone market revenue in 2024 recorded a 5% increase compared to 2023. Notably, the average selling price of smartphones reached 356 USD, the highest level ever.
Despite facing economic challenges in recent years, the smartphone market has recovered thanks to improved consumer sentiment and growing demand for premium models. This trend shows that buyers are willing to spend more on devices with superior features and advanced technology.
Global smartphone shipments rose 4%, marking the first annual growth since 2021. Analysts said the recovery was driven by the expansion of 5G technology, upgrades to camera systems, and improvements in chip performance, which motivated users to upgrade their devices.
Apple continues to assert its leading position when the iPhone 15 tops the list of best-selling smartphones. Right behind, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro also recorded impressive sales, maintaining strong appeal in the market.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro has proven to be superior to other iPhone 16 models in the first quarter of its launch on the market, showing that buyers not only focus on performance and features but also continue to favor high-end devices that provide the superior experience that Apple brings.
The dominance of the Pro line reflects not only the strong appeal of premium devices, but also the buying habits of Apple’s most loyal users. These customers are always willing to pay for new Pro models as soon as they are released, which not only affirms the preference for premium products but also plays an important role in boosting Apple’s sales, especially during the holiday season.
Despite a 3% decline in iPhone shipments, Apple maintained strong growth, driven by an average selling price (ASP) that surpassed $900 for the first time. The company also successfully expanded its presence in emerging markets, with shipments in Latin America recording an impressive 44% growth, contributing significantly to global revenue.
Samsung retained its position as the world's largest smartphone brand by shipments. The Galaxy S24 series has seen better sales than its predecessor, thanks to its enhanced AI features.
Among other brands, Vivo posted the most impressive revenue growth of 20%, largely due to strong performance in the Chinese and Indian markets. Meanwhile, Xiaomi recorded the highest shipment growth of 16%, thanks to its strategy of focusing on affordable 5G devices and strong expansion in Latin America and the Middle East.
The smartphone industry is expected to continue to maintain steady growth through 2025, with AI-enabled devices being a key differentiator. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, the first S series to enter the top 10 best-selling smartphones globally since 2018, further highlights the strong appeal of AI features to buyers.
Low-end and mid-range 5G devices are expected to continue to expand their market share strongly, especially in developing regions such as India, Southeast Asia and Africa, where the demand for affordable 5G-connected devices is growing rapidly.
As competition in the smartphone market intensifies, brands will focus on integrating advanced AI features, improving camera quality and enhancing battery life to attract buyers and provide superior experiences.
Although the global smartphone market has reached saturation, 2024 will still see strong demand for innovation, especially in the high-end segment. If manufacturers continue to focus on developing AI and delivering premium experiences, revenue could recover and grow in the coming years.
