Reuters on August 14 quoted Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar as saying that fighting was fierce on the entire front line and Kyiv had achieved "some success" in pushing back Russian forces in a part of the southeast.
She acknowledged that progress was hampered by extensive minefields and Russian entrenchment. But Ukrainian troops had advanced around the village of Staromaiorske, about 95 kilometers (60 miles) from Russian-controlled Donetsk, and were pressing on two southern fronts.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said Ukraine had become "the most mined country in the world" and called on allies to step up efforts to support mine clearance.
"The minefields are hundreds of kilometers long, with millions of explosive devices, and in some frontline areas there are up to five mines per square meter," he was quoted as saying by The Guardian .

Mines planted in Russian-controlled areas have slowed Ukraine's counteroffensive, limiting efforts to regain control of territories in the east and south.
At a Ramstein conference in Germany on July 15, Lithuania announced plans to form a demining coalition for Ukraine that would bolster aid in the form of training and demining equipment.

Reznikov said it was “an important step”, but urgent support was vital. “It is also necessary to expand and accelerate the training of engineers, which must be carried out quickly and systematically. Engineers are needed here right now,” the Ukrainian defence minister said.
Mr. Pete Smith, Ukraine program manager at the Scottish NGO Halo, said that the density of mines in Ukraine is "unprecedented in modern history". Russia has not commented on the above information.

Ukraine continues to deal with UAVs
According to The Kyiv Independent news site on August 14, the Ukrainian Air Force said that Russia organized several attacks at night with suicide drones and cruise missiles.
Accordingly, Russia used a total of 15 Shahed-136/131 UAVs and 8 Kalibr missiles, all of which were shot down.
The UAVs were launched from Primorsko-Akhtarsk, a town on the coast of the Sea of Azov in Russia's Krasnodar Krai region, while the missiles were launched from a ship based near Yalta in Crimea.
Debris from the rocket and UAV fell on Odessa, causing fires in several locations in the city and injuring three employees of a supermarket.
Also on August 14, Ukrainian soldiers shot down a Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter near Bakhmut.
Ukraine suffers double casualties after counter-offensive begins
Meanwhile, TASS news agency reported that Russian forces attacked units of the 63rd and 67th mechanized brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the direction of Krasny Liman, causing the enemy to lose more than 60 people.
Russia and Ukraine have not commented on the other side's information. Reuters on August 14 quoted Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu as saying that Russian weapons are proving effective in Ukraine, while Western weapons are "far from perfect."
Regarding the incident in which a Russian warship fired warning shots at a cargo ship in the Black Sea, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on August 14 "strongly condemned the provocative action."
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that on August 13, a Russian warship fired automatic weapons to warn off a Palau-flagged cargo ship in the southwestern Black Sea as it headed toward Ukraine, according to TASS.
Specifically, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the patrol ship Vasily Bykov fired warning shots after the captain of the ship Sukru Okan did not respond to orders to stop for inspection.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said the Sukru Okan was en route to the Ukrainian port of Izmail. Refinitiv data showed the ship was heading north toward the Bulgarian coast.
