From about 12 noon to 3 pm every day, at Van Loc wharf (Nghi Tan ward, Vinh city, Nghe An), dozens of crab hunting boats dock. |
Here, most people hunt crabs with nets, working in families of 2-4 workers. Crab fishing takes place all year round, but is best from September to December. |
With more than 10 years of experience at sea, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (45 years old, residing in Hoang Mai town, Nghe An) said that to catch crabs, you have to use special nets. Crab catching nets are usually about 3m high, with moderate mesh size, and are 1,000 - 2,000m long. |
“The family boat sets sail at 10pm the night before and docks at around 1pm the next day. On average, our boat catches 2-3 tonnes of crabs a day. After deducting fuel costs, each person earns about one million dong,” Tuan shared. |
With her nimble hands removing crabs, Ms. Ho Thi Minh (34 years old) said that she was hired to remove crabs caught in the net with an income of about 25,000 VND/hour. “The job of removing crabs requires perseverance and meticulousness so that the crabs do not break their legs and the net is less likely to tear or be damaged. The time to remove crabs usually lasts from 3 to 5 hours.” |
The net is heavy with crabs, shrimps, fish, etc. |
Crabs are brought from boats to shore by people to sell. |
The boat had not yet returned to the dock, but traders had already gathered at the dock, waiting to buy crabs. The scene of selecting and selling crabs was quite bustling. |
There are many species of crabs, of which blue crabs are valuable and popular in the market because of their fragrant, firm meat and rich roe. |
In addition to crabs, people also buy, sell and exchange other types of fish and shrimp. |
After being purchased, crabs will mainly be sold at local markets. |
Mr. Nguyen Duc Cuong, a crab buyer, said that he buys 80-100kg of crabs every day. This year, crabs are selling well. The price of type 1 crabs at the wharf is 250,000 VND/kg, type 2 crabs are priced from 150,000 - 180,000 VND/kg... After purchasing, he raises and stores them in tanks to distribute to restaurants in and outside the province. |
