Weight loss due to fatty liver, high blood pressure

Báo Đầu tưBáo Đầu tư13/10/2024

According to doctors, more and more people are coming to medical facilities to lose weight and reduce visceral fat, mainly to prevent diabetes, joint pain, fatty liver, high blood pressure, and snoring due to being overweight.

At present, up to 70% of cases come to control weight with the desire to push back the underlying disease they are suffering from, especially patients who are having difficulty losing weight in addition to treating the underlying disease; the remaining 30% are to prevent the risk of complications of being overweight and have the need to beautify and slim down.

According to doctors, more and more people are coming to medical facilities to lose weight and reduce visceral fat, mainly to prevent diabetes, joint pain, fatty liver, high blood pressure, snoring, etc. due to being overweight.

Dr. Lam Van Hoang, Director of the Center for Weight Control and Obesity Treatment, Tam Anh General Hospital system, said that most patients who register for weight loss have the same concerns such as eating less but still being overweight, while some people eat a lot or exercise intensely, and have a strict diet but still have difficulty losing weight and fat.

In fact, fat plays a certain role in the body as a cushion to protect organs, store energy, and help regulate hormones. However, too much fat accumulation causes many health problems, especially visceral fat.

Visceral fat can affect the body through many mechanisms such as increasing insulin resistance, causing hyperglycemia, high risk of diabetes; increasing inflammatory response, increasing cytokine secretion, reducing the detoxification process in the body, contributing to stroke, colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc.; inhibiting fat hormones, making it easier to gain weight, etc.

In addition, abnormal visceral fat index also causes a number of problems such as dementia, gout, asthma, osteoarthritis, back pain, breast cancer, Alzheimer's...

Dr. Lam Van Hoang shared that overweight and obesity are caused by many factors such as diet, lack of exercise, but are also related to genetics, endocrine diseases (including hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, insulinoma, genital obesity, etc.), drugs, and some metabolic diseases... causing the body to change, disrupt the cycle of converting food into energy and storing fat.

Therefore, to effectively lose weight, prevent and reverse a specific disease, it is impossible to apply a general formula to all patients.

According to doctors, people with a BMI greater than 30, according to research, will face one or more risks at the same time such as: 52% knee arthritis, 51% high blood pressure, 40% sleep apnea, 35% gastroesophageal reflux symptoms (GERD), 29% non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, 21% myocardial infarction, 21% diabetes, 19% severe depression, 9% polycystic ovary syndrome, 8% ischemia, 3.5% congestive heart failure, 3% stroke, increased risk of cancer...

In Vietnam, 13.9% of adults are overweight and 1.7% are obese, so this is the "iceberg" that is and will give rise to underlying diseases and potential complications of overweight and obesity.

Therefore, people and the medical industry need to be aware of protecting themselves and their families, losing weight, reducing visceral fat to prevent diseases and prevent the above complications.

However, patients should not lose weight by themselves with methods such as extreme fasting, taking functional foods and weight loss drugs of unknown origin, liposuction and surgery at facilities not licensed by the Ministry of Health because of the risk of adverse health effects. Losing weight by yourself that is not suitable for your health condition can make underlying diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney failure, etc. worse.

According to Dr. Lam Van Hoang, treating obesity is not a matter of a day or two, but a process that requires enough time to lose weight sustainably and effectively, and avoid gaining weight again.

Patients need to see a doctor, perform paraclinical tests, and come up with a treatment solution that combines nutrition, exercise, medication, management of underlying diseases, and reduces the risk of complications.
