At the press conference of the Hanoi People's Committee on the afternoon of January 19, answering questions from the press regarding the case of a Tiktoker who was accused of being kicked out of a restaurant because she was in a wheelchair, Ms. Nguyen Thi Mai Huong - Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Information and Communications said that the Department received information about this incident.
The Department Inspectorate is verifying the incident with relevant parties to resolve it reasonably.
"If there are any violations, they will be handled according to regulations, but we must also show humanity because the information is quite sensitive. After this incident, it is also a lesson to improve the social responsibility of users. People who create content and information on social networks need to learn from experience when participating in the online environment and must improve their sense of responsibility," Ms. Huong added.
Previously, on his personal Facebook, Tiktoker VML said that he and his girlfriend went to a pho restaurant in Hanoi. Due to congenital paralysis, Mr. L. had to use a wheelchair.
When asking the staff to carry the cart over the steps, they were refused with the answer "our shop doesn't have staff to carry someone like you".
VML's post caused controversy online. (Screenshot).
At the second pho restaurant, L. said this was a familiar restaurant, the two of them went in to eat normally. The seats were small and narrow, L. squeezed in a little bit closer to the owner. "She stood up and scolded the staff: Who let this kind of person in here to eat?", the Tiktoker said.
After receiving the answer from the staff that Mr. L. normally sits here, the owner continued: " If it doesn't sell, then I'll stand...".
Mr. VML said: "The meal was stuck in my throat, it was hard to swallow." He shared that he was used to this feeling, but his girlfriend "started to cry." Under the post, L. added that after going out for coffee, he accidentally met foreign tourists who were visiting Hanoi for the first time and received a souvenir gift and words of encouragement from them.
On January 15, in response to the controversy on social media about a young man being refused service at a pho restaurant because he was in a wheelchair, one of the two pho restaurants released the camera footage of the incident.
According to the camera at the chicken pho restaurant on Nam Ngu street (Hoan Kiem, Hanoi), Tiktoker VML and his girlfriend arrived at the restaurant. Because the road was too narrow, the restaurant owner and staff moved their belongings and pho baskets to another location.
Mr. VML sat right behind the restaurant owner. Then, when they settled down, the meal started. They had 2 bowls of pho and a plate of fried dough sticks. After the young man and his girlfriend finished eating, the restaurant staff continued to help push his wheelchair out.
The owner of this pho restaurant confirmed that L. was a regular customer who often ate pho in the evening. On the morning of January 12, L. and his girlfriend came to the restaurant. Because the entrance to the restaurant was small and it was raining, the owner invited the two to sit at the cafe across the street and then had the staff bring the pho over.
"But she still wanted to come to the restaurant, we welcomed her as usual," said the restaurant representative. L. and his girlfriend sat at the first table, behind the restaurant owner, next to the chicken weighing area. The restaurant owner reminded L. not to sit in this position next time, as it would make it difficult to sell.
"She then smiled and ate normally, but then posted on social media implying that we were being disrespectful, which is not true," the person said. The restaurant owner affirmed that he never used vulgar language to chase away customers, especially people with disabilities.
After receiving backlash from the online community, VML has now removed this post from his personal Facebook page.
In addition, the video of the last day in Hanoi, which shows a young man and his girlfriend eating at a pho restaurant on Nam Ngu street, has also been hidden from VML's TikTok channel.
