(CLO) On Friday night, US President Donald Trump suddenly fired Air Force General Charles Brown from the position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and nominated Air Force Lieutenant General Dan "Razin" Caine to replace him.
"General Caine is an accomplished aviator, national security expert, successful businessman, and a 'warrior' with extensive experience in special operations and interagency," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post announcing the nomination.
Mr Trump said that during his first term, the three-star general was "credited" with "completely destroying" the Islamic State empire.
"General Caine embodies the warrior spirit and is exactly the leader we need at this time. I look forward to working with him," said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Although the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff usually remains in his position during the transition of power, Mr. Trump has decided to find a replacement.
Both Mr. Trump and Mr. Hegseth paid tribute to the outgoing president, four-star fighter pilot Gen. Charles Brown.
"I want to thank General Charles 'CQ' Brown for his more than 40 years of service to our country, including as our current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff," Trump wrote.
Prior to his appointment, General Brown served as the 22nd chief of staff of the US Air Force from 2020 to 2023. He has more than 3,000 flight hours as a fighter pilot, including 130 combat hours.
Meanwhile, General Caine has more than 2,800 flight hours in F-16 aircraft, including more than 100 combat hours.
