According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, statistics from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) show that in the first 5 months of the year, the country spent 492.3 million USD to import mangoes, an increase of 2.6% in volume and 3.4% in value compared to 2022. This could be an opportunity for Vietnamese mangoes.

Vietnamese mangoes exported to the US have high prices but very low quantities

Currently, the US imports the most mangoes from Mexico and Peru; in the first 5 months of this year, the two markets accounted for 81.6% of the total mango imports into the US. Vietnam ranks 12th among countries exporting mangoes and processed mango products to the US. Notably, the price of US mangoes imported from Vietnam reached 3,017 USD/ton, an increase of 32.9% over the same period in 2022, but Vietnamese mangoes only accounted for 0.2% of US mango imports.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade noted that in the first 5 months of this year, the US increased its import of fresh mangoes from Vietnam with an output of 262,300 tons, total value of 284.9 million USD , up 6.2% in volume and 8.5% in value over the same period in 2022. Of which, fresh mangoes accounted for 76.8% but only accounted for 0.19%. Mango juice exported to the US increased significantly, from 2.73% in the first 5 months of 2022 to 5.84% in the first 5 months of 2023.

Speaking to Thanh Nien , Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, Director of Vina T&T Company, said that to increase the quantity, mangoes must be transported by sea, the transportation and preservation time is about 30 - 35 days, so there is not much time left to sell. This is the reason why Vietnamese businesses find it difficult to increase the export volume of mangoes to the US.

Besides, Vietnamese mangoes also face great competition from Mexico and Peru in terms of price, quality and shipping time.

"To increase the output and export value of mangoes to the US, Vietnam needs technology to preserve mangoes for longer periods. Businesses need to cooperate with farmers and gardeners to build large-scale growing areas, ensuring standards and quality to meet the requirements of the US market in order to export mangoes at high prices," said Mr. Tung.
