Gold prices hit a record high as investors sought safe-haven assets in response to escalating global trade tensions and a plunge in stock markets following US President Donald Trump's announcement of new auto tariffs.

The retail price of DOJI gold bars is currently listed at VND97.4 million/tael (buy) and VND98.9 million/tael (sell), an increase of VND700,000/tael for buying and VND500,000/tael for selling, compared to the close of the previous trading session.

Bao Tin Minh Chau gold price is currently buying at 97.5 million VND/tael and selling at 98.9 million VND/tael, an increase of 700,000 VND/tael for buying and 500,000 VND/tael for selling, compared to the previous session.

At Mi Hong Jewelry Company, the buying price of SJC gold is 98.5 million VND/tael and the selling price is 99.7 million VND/tael. Thus, compared to the previous session, the gold price increased by 200,000 VND/tael in the selling direction and remained the same in the buying direction.

According to Kitco, the world gold price recorded at 4am today, Vietnam time, was 3,052.89 USD/ounce. Today's gold price increased by 1.12% compared to yesterday. Converted according to the USD exchange rate on the free market (25,870 VND/USD), the world gold price is about 95.2 million VND/tael (excluding taxes and fees). Thus, the price of SJC gold bars is 2.2 million VND/tael higher than the international gold price.

Gold prices climbed to a record high as investors sought safe-haven assets in response to escalating global trade tensions and a plunge in stock markets, after US President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on cars, Reuters reported.

Spot gold rose 1.2% to $3,057.12 an ounce at 11:17 a.m. ET (1517 GMT) after hitting an all-time high of $3,059.30. The precious metal has hit 17 record highs this year. U.S. gold futures rose 1.5% to $3,069.10, also hitting an all-time high of $3,070.90 earlier in the session.

“It looks like we’re going to see (gold futures) hit $3,100 soon and the main catalyst is safe-haven buying,” fueled by uncertainty around Trump’s tariff plans, said Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at RJO Futures.

Governments from Ottawa to Paris have threatened retaliation after Trump announced a 25% tariff on imported cars, set to take effect the day after he was due to announce retaliatory tariffs targeting countries he says are largely responsible for the US trade deficit. Global stock markets fell as shares of some of the world’s biggest automakers plunged.

Gold is also getting support from strong central bank inflows and ETF demand, said Phillip Streible, chief market strategist at Blue Line Futures.

Investors are now awaiting US personal consumption expenditure (PCE) data due on Friday to gauge the trajectory for further rate cuts, following the Federal Reserve's decision last week to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged.

Gold is traditionally seen as a hedge against economic and political instability and typically thrives in low interest rate environments.

Goldman Sachs recently raised its 2025 gold price forecast to $3,300 an ounce from $3,100, citing stronger-than-expected ETF inflows and sustained demand from central banks.

Spot silver rose 1.8% to $34.30 an ounce after hitting its highest since October 2024 earlier in the session. Platinum rose 1% to $984.32 an ounce and palladium added 1.3% to $980.25.
