Gia Lam develops many models of growing ornamental flowers and plants

In recent years, Gia Lam commune (Nho Quan) has been known by many people as the "capital" of flowers and ornamental plants when many local households have chosen to grow peach and flowers as a direction for family economic development, bringing high efficiency.

Although there are still several months until Lunar New Year 2024, many people come to buy plants every day at flower and ornamental plant growers in Gia Lam commune.

Mr. Vu Quang Hung (Ninh Binh city) said: Many years ago, I often imported flowers from Hanoi and Nam Dinh. In recent years, I learned that Gia Lam commune has a large supply of flowers and ornamental plants, so I went there to consult, deposit to buy peach trees and ornamental flowers, and proactively source goods to sell during the Lunar New Year. I see that the source of goods here is diverse in types, and flower and ornamental plant traders can easily choose goods according to consumer tastes.

In recent years, Tet peach trees grown on Gia Lam land are being chosen by consumers because of their beautiful flower quality and reasonable price. Mr. Bui Hoang Viet, village 3, Gia Lam commune - a Tet peach grower said: Realizing that Tet peach trees are suitable for the local soil, more than 6 years ago, I boldly planted hundreds of small peach trees on a trial basis, which initially gave better economic efficiency than growing vegetables.

Grasping the taste of customers who like to play with large, flowery wild peach trees, in 2022, I put into trial planting 100 wild peach trees with large trunks. In the process of taking care of the trees, I learned from the experiences of wild peach growers in provinces and cities; researched online, through books and newspapers to proactively take care of, strip leaves, prevent pests and diseases, adjust the peach trees to bloom in time for Tet, suitable for the weather and climate. Currently, I maintain planting over 100 wild peach trees and 200 small peach trees to serve the diverse needs of customers. My peach garden is ordered by customers inside and outside the province. Each peach tree is sold from several hundred thousand to more than ten million VND. After deducting expenses, each year I have an income of nearly 300 million VND from growing peach trees.

For Gia Lam commune, growing flowers and ornamental plants is the local strength in economic development. Mr. Bui Van Cu, village 4, Gia Lam commune - a household growing flowers and ornamental plants said: In 2015, implementing the movement of "land consolidation and plot exchange" of the commune, I boldly bid for land from the people to implement a family economic model with an area of over 5,000 m2. Choosing to grow flowers and ornamental plants as the direction of economic development of the family, I have learned the techniques of growing flowers, invested in growing bougainvillea, peonies, roses, peach trees for Tet, and nurturing star apple trees... with over 3,500 trees of all kinds, including over 2,000 peach trees.

The source of ornamental plants I choose to buy is from provinces and cities across the country, including dozens of bougainvillea and old roses with high economic value, from several tens of millions of VND to 100 million VND. Every year, after deducting expenses, this model brings my family an income of about 500 million VND. With the desire to expand the area and increase income, I registered to join the commune's flower and ornamental plant growing cooperative to share production and business experiences with other households.

According to the leaders of the Gia Lam Commune Farmers' Association, in the process of building the commune to achieve advanced new rural areas and model new rural areas, the Party Committee and the commune government have paid special attention to promoting the development of key economic models with high economic efficiency. Promoting the advantages of the locality with a large agricultural land area, households have researched and innovated to develop the profession of growing flowers and ornamental plants. The Association at all levels has also promptly paid attention to supporting farmer members to borrow capital; organized classes to transfer science and technology to farmer members; and paid attention to building cooperative models to create a chain of links in production and business, bringing stable value.

Up to now, Gia Lam commune has 3 cooperative groups (including flower and ornamental plant growing cooperative group with 29 members; high-tech peach growing cooperative group with 60 members; aquaculture cooperative group with 18 members). The average income of cooperative members is about 100 million VND/year or more.

The economic efficiency of growing flowers and ornamental plants has affirmed the success in economic restructuring, contributing to the construction of advanced new rural areas and model new rural areas in Gia Lam commune.
