Yuan Forecast

China has more than 220 million individual investors, meaning their market moves can have a big impact on sentiment. They were once known for investing like “gamblers.” But after the market plunge in recent years, they have started to withdraw their money and invest in safer assets like money market funds.

Besides stocks, the real estate market has eroded middle-class confidence even more. The Chinese government’s efforts to rein in debt in the real estate sector about three years ago have plunged the entire industry into crisis, leaving many companies on the brink of collapse.

In February, existing home prices in China's most developed cities fell 6.3% year-on-year, the biggest drop on record.

The shift toward investing less and saving more creates a vicious cycle in which economic decline weakens confidence, and weak confidence in turn exacerbates the slowdown, according to Yasheng Huang, professor of economics and management at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
