The People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, has invited brokerages to advise on the pricing of the first batch of government bonds, which Beijing announced at the annual session of the National People's Congress in March to support investment in key sectors of the economy and bolster economic recovery amid a prolonged property crisis, sources said.
“This bond issuance is an important part of China’s overall efforts to support important, urgent and challenging projects that are crucial to economic modernization,” Liu Sushe, deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said in a statement in April. “These are long-planned but unimplemented projects that require central-level impetus.”
China’s plan to issue $140 billion in long-term bonds comes after local banks bought government bonds in the first quarter of this year, pushing yields on government bonds to record lows. Government bonds are seen by banks as a “safe haven” from the volatility in China’s stock and property markets.
