Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for June 2025 delivery rose 50 yuan to 3,165 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures were mixed, as traders weighed concerns about China’s steel demand outlook following the country’s latest batch of trade data against lower global supplies.

The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) DCIOcv1 traded 0.36% lower at 684 yuan ($96.12) a tonne.

However, the October benchmark iron ore SZZFV4 on the Singapore Exchange rose 1.52% to $92.0 a tonne.

China’s exports rose at the fastest pace in nearly a year and a half in August, suggesting manufacturers were rushing to place orders ahead of tariffs from a growing number of trading partners, while imports disappointed amid weak domestic demand.

The mixed trade data highlights the challenge Beijing faces as policymakers try to boost overall growth without relying too much on exports, especially as consumer purse strings tighten.

Imports into China were seasonally weaker in August as processors faced a lackluster economic outlook, ANZ analysts said in a note. However, demand may be improving as industries ramp up operations ahead of the northern winter. Strong steel exports continue to offset some weakness in the steel industry, which is struggling with thin profit margins.

Customs data showed that the top consumer's iron ore imports in August fell 1.38% from July and 4.73% from a year earlier, as falling steel prices and a gloomy demand outlook dampened buyer appetite.

Meanwhile, iron ore shipments to global destinations from 19 ports and 16 miners in Australia and Brazil snapped a three-week streak of gains, falling 10.8% week-on-week in the September 2-8 period, data from consultancy Mysteel showed.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE were mixed, with coking coal DJMcv1 down 0.97%, while coking coal DCJcv1 rose 0.28%.

Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange posted gains. Rebar SRBcv1 rose about 0.7%, wire rod SWRcv1 rose 0.56%, hot-rolled coil SHHCcv1 rose 0.45%, while stainless steel SHHScv1 fell nearly 0.8%.
