According to some sources, VFF has in hand many profiles from candidates for the vacant Vietnam national team seat, after parting ways with coach Troussier since March 26.
These candidates are Europeans and Asians, with the most applications coming from Japan and Korea. Learning from the experience of Coach Troussier, who was quickly decided because of his eye-catching resume, this time VFF has set out many criteria and has consulted the National Coaching Council on expertise.
VFF Vice President Tran Anh Tu said that the important criteria for the new head coach must be someone with prestige, high expertise, and understanding of Vietnamese culture, people and football .

But VFF also has many other criteria to find suitable coaches. The selection of the national team captain is being conducted carefully and thoroughly.
According to research, VFF is targeting candidates with good achievements in recent years, because they are the ones who keep up with the development of world football .
Previously, one of the reasons for the failure of the Vietnamese team was pointed out as Coach Troussier having been away from top-level football for a long time (he has not led any national team in the past 10 years). Therefore, the 69-year-old strategist, despite having an extremely impressive CV, has very limited practicality.
In particular, learning from what happened under Coach Troussier's reign, VFF prioritizes finding coaches who can inspire, connect with players, and are willing to cooperate with the media.
Sharing with VietNamNet, a VFF leader confirmed that the search for a head coach is ongoing, and official information will only be announced to the media after the two sides reach an agreement to sign a contract.

According to some sources, VFF is "narrowing down" the most suitable profiles, then continuing to research, evaluate, and discuss among professional departments. Only when a few faces are selected for the "final round", will VFF start negotiations. In parallel, VFF is also looking for funding sources to be able to pay high salaries to foreign coaches.
Currently, the majority of VFF Executive Committee members support the option of hiring a Japanese or Korean coach, but do not rule out the possibility of surprises with candidates from Europe.
In case of finding a suitable person soon, VFF can completely sign a contract before June for the new head coach to debut in the two matches between Vietnam and the Philippines and Iraq in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia.
