Nearly 30% of unemployed workers in Ho Chi Minh City are over 40 years old

Of the more than 166,000 people seeking unemployment benefits in 2023 in the city, nearly 48,000 are over 40 years old, accounting for nearly 30%.

The information was announced by Ms. Nguyen Van Hanh Thuc, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Employment Service Center, on January 10. In 2023, the number of workers wanting to receive unemployment benefits in the area increased by 10% over the same period. They lost their jobs due to businesses cutting staff or others wanting to change jobs.

Of the more than 166,000 unemployed people, 8% are under 24 years old, 62% are in the 25-40 age group, and 29% are over 40 years old. However, when compared over the years, the rate of workers over 40 years old losing their jobs in the total number of people registering for unemployment benefits is increasing, in 2023 it will be 1.6 times higher than in 2021.

Specifically, in 2021, more than 29,000 workers over 40 years old lost their jobs, accounting for over 26% of the total number of people seeking unemployment benefits. This rate in 2022 was over 27%, equivalent to more than 40,600 people.

Analyzing the reasons for the increase in unemployment among older workers, labor expert Nguyen Xuan Son said that when facing difficulties in orders and business, factories are forced to recalculate their workforce. Enterprises will prioritize retaining young workers to continue training, waiting for recovery. For labor-intensive manufacturing industries that receive wages over time, with regular salary increases, long-term employees mean high salaries, so they are likely to fall into the group of people being cut.

In addition, recently, many businesses have recorded a situation where long-term employees with less than 20 years of social insurance contributions have also proactively quit to wait to receive a one-time subsidy.

Of the more than 166,000 people who want to receive unemployment benefits, workers without qualifications or certificates account for 51%, with an average benefit level of more than 5.5 million VND per month.

According to Ms. Thuc, many manufacturing enterprises such as textiles and footwear have started to receive orders or expand their factories and are in need of recruiting new workers up to the age of 45. This is a positive sign for the market and an opportunity for the unemployed. However, many people only want to receive subsidies and refuse jobs when introduced, which leads to a situation where many workers lose their jobs but businesses still have difficulty recruiting people.
