Der Spiegel reported on November 20 that Western intelligence agencies, including the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), had warned Germany about the risk of sabotage of the Nord Stream pipeline, about 3 months before the incident occurred.
However, Berlin did not listen and is said to have considered the warning to be false, leading to a failure to respond promptly.
Gas leaks from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in the Baltic Sea in September 2022
According to Der Spiegel , a Swedish agent informed Western intelligence agencies about preparations for a sabotage operation in June 2022. The Nord Stream pipeline exploded in late September of that year.
RT reported that Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) received encrypted messages from foreign colleagues, including the Dutch and CIA agencies, in June 2022, warning of a planned attack. According to sources, at least six Ukrainian commandos using fake documents were preparing to charter a boat to dive to the bottom of the Baltic Sea and prepare to detonate the gas pipeline.
Nord Stream explosion: Ukrainian diver wanted; did Zelensky approve the operation?
According to the warnings, the operation was green-lighted by Valery Zaluzhny, then Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army, and was scheduled to take place during NATO naval exercises in the Baltic Sea from June 5-17, 2022.
The BND only passed the information to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's office after the exercise had ended. The German government said the information was irrelevant because nothing happened during the exercise.
The Nord Stream pipeline connects Russia to Germany, supplying Russian gas to Europe. After the explosions, Germany and the Baltic states launched an investigation. Germany has not released any information about the investigation, but media reported in August that it had ordered the arrest of a Ukrainian man involved, believed to be a diver involved in the scheme.
Berlin has not commented on the above information of Der Spiegel .
Over the past year, Danish and Swedish authorities have ended their investigations, saying they lack the authority and basis to continue.
