Profit from 250 - 300 million/ha
With 1,200 longan trees, Mr. Dang Thanh Tam (Thoi Hung commune, Co Do district, Can Tho city) said that this year, the garden bore fruit early, but due to hot weather and heavy rain during harvest, the fruit yield did not reach expectations. The estimated yield is about 20 tons/2.5 hectares.
“Although the fruit is not as big as the main crop, it is still delicious, sweet, dry, and has small seeds that meet export standards. In addition, as one of the first export shipments, the price is good, so the estimated profit is about 300 million VND/ha, about 50 million VND/ha higher than last year,” Mr. Tam shared.
Similarly, Mr. Cao Dung (Thoi Hung commune, Co Do district, Can Tho city) is also busy harvesting longan fruits to prepare for export. According to Mr. Dung, this year the weather is harsh, the yield is not too high, but thanks to good prices, the expected profit is the same as last year.
“This year, the average yield is 8 - 10 tons/ha. Profit depends on market prices. This year, we were able to export early, the price of longan fruit also increased, the profit for this crop is equivalent to last year, reaching 250 - 300 million/ha,” said Mr. Dung.
Mr. Tran Phuoc Son - Head of the Trang Ti Garden Fruit Cooperative (Thoi Hung Commune, Co Do District, Can Tho City) - said that the cooperative currently has 11 official members with a production area of 69 hectares of longan. The average yield is 8 tons/ha, with an estimated total output of over 500 tons.
Leaving the fruit early and spreading the season among the members of the group helps to prolong the selling cycle, the quantity of harvested longan is not concentrated, limiting the situation of low prices. According to calculations, the hot weather has caused the yield of the gardens that left the fruit early to not reach the expected quantity, but the productivity is still stable. If there are no obstacles, in the next month, the longan gardens that left the fruit in season will have a higher yield.
Stable output
According to Mr. Tam, in addition to domestic consumption, longan is also sold to companies for export abroad, so the output is very stable. "This year, my garden plans to export 10-12 tons, the rest will be sold at markets. Longan is consumed both domestically and internationally, so the output is stable, there is no congestion causing the price to decrease," said Mr. Tam.
Mr. Dung's longan orchard also has a stable output because it is associated with businesses for consumption and export to foreign countries: "The longan orchard harvest lasts for 1 month because some fruits ripen first and some later. I will have another harvest in the near future. My orchard this year is expected to export about 8 - 9 tons of longan."
Mr. Tran Phuoc Son said that in the near future, THT will sign a contract with Vina T&T Group to consume THT's longan for export to markets such as the US, Australia, Japan, etc.
“This signing is an opportunity, opening up prospects for longan fruit to grow high and fly far. In particular, we are also in the process of building a brand. Therefore, the production process must be strict so that the fruit is both clean and of good quality, meeting export standards. In addition, we have found and are in the process of grafting to create new, high-quality longan varieties,” said Mr. Son.
