Yen exchange rate trend forecast
The yen was boosted after Bank of Japan (BoJ) board member Junko Nakagawa said the BoJ would continue to raise interest rates if the economy and inflation develop in line with their forecasts.
Real interest rates remain low, so there is plenty of room for policy tightening, which should help strengthen the yen, according to BoJ's Nakagawa.
Traders are also anxiously awaiting a key US inflation report, which could provide clues on how the US Federal Reserve will cut interest rates next week.
The Fed, by contrast, is expected to ease policy on September 18 for the first time in more than four years, but traders are divided on the extent of the cut. LSEG estimates there is a 67% chance of a 25 basis point cut and a 33% chance of a sharp 50 basis point cut.
The market wants evidence that inflation is evolving in a way that gives the Fed the flexibility to cut 50 basis points if needed, said Kyle Rodda, senior market analyst at Capital.com.
