Hoan Kiem Lake , also known as Sword Lake - the vestige of an ancient stretch of the Nhi Ha River, is a famous scenic spot of the Capital.
In the past, this lake was called Luc Thuy Lake, Ta Vong Lake, then renamed according to the legend of King Le Thai To returning the sword, so it was called Hoan Kiem Lake/Sword Lake. On the mound of land in the lake, there is a tower, where turtles often crawl up to lay eggs, so it is called Turtle Tower (Quy Son Tower). Ngoc Son Temple is not only a religious relic, but was once also the place of activities of the Huong Thien Association, an organization that gathered many patriotic Confucian scholars of the time, such as Nguyen Van Sieu (1799-1870), Vu Tong Phan (1800-1851) to propagate and educate the masses on good deeds, and organized the printing of many types of books, such as medical books, Taoist scriptures, books on beliefs... When the French occupied Hanoi, many other associations, such as Lac Thien, Tap Thien, An Lac also used Ngoc Son Temple as a base to propagate the policy of fighting against the French.
