Managing more than 278,000 hectares of land planned for forestry, protecting and improving the quality of more than 248,000 hectares of forested land, maintaining stable forest cover at 49 - 50%; planting concentrated forests annually from 7,000 - 8,000 hectares and more than 3 million scattered trees; promoting the development of large timber forests, forests certified for sustainable management... These are the basic goals that the Forest Protection Department is aiming for in order to restructure the forestry sector and increase forest value.

Leader in international forest certification and large timber plantation
Since 2007, with the support of the General Department of Forestry and international organizations, Quang Tri has been the leading locality in the country in implementing a sustainable forest management model associated with forest certification for both businesses and households. To date, the province has had more than 26,000 hectares of forest certified by FSC.
Forestry LLCs: Road 9, Ben Hai, Trieu Hai over 16,360 hectares; Ha Xa Cooperative, Trieu Ai Commune, Trieu Phong District 406 hectares with 110 households; Association of households groups with forest certificates in Quang Tri is 5,396 hectares, including: 3,251 hectares of planted forests and 2,144 hectares of natural forests. In addition, there is an area of 3,970 hectares with 444 households of the Hai Lang District forest certificate household group that has just been assessed and is waiting to be granted a certificate.
According to the assessment, forest certification has contributed to increasing the economic value of forests, stabilizing the output of forest products, contributing to solving the raw material problem for the export processing industry, meeting the increasingly strict requirements of the international market. The benefits of forest-certified wood are a stable market, higher prices than non-certified wood, contributing to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, combating climate change and increasing forest carbon storage.
Along with that, in order to realize the goal of "making Quang Tri province a center for supplying raw materials and processing planted forest wood in the Central region" according to the Resolution of the 17th Quang Tri Provincial Party Congress, term 2020 - 2025, in the past time, on the basis of the mechanisms and policies of the province, the agricultural sector, forest owners, people and local authorities in the area have promoted forest development activities, focusing on intensive forest planting towards improving productivity and quality of planted forests, contributing to effectively exploiting land potential.
In particular, special attention is paid to developing plantation timber material areas and planting timber for large timber business. According to statistics from the Forestry Department, with the outstanding results, along with the drastic direction of departments, branches, localities and the efforts of the people, up to now, the whole province has planted more than 4,250 hectares of large timber forests, converting from small timber to large timber business of 13,799 hectares.
Maintain stable forest and forestry land areas
According to the results of forest development updates, the total area of forest and forestry land in the province after adjusting the forest protection and development planning/planning of three types of forests is 277,899 hectares. Including 126,716 hectares of natural forest, 108,385 hectares of planted forest, and 42,798 hectares of vacant land planned for forestry. Effective management and use of forest and forestry land areas is a prerequisite for the successful implementation of the forestry development project for the period 2023 - 2025, with a vision to 2030.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Phan Van Phuoc affirmed that over the past time, through programs, plans and projects, the area of planted forests and forest cover of the province have increased steadily over the years, reaching 49.4% to date, making it one of the few localities with high and stable forest cover in the country.
In particular, through these programs and projects, the development of local forestry has been stimulated, especially when economic sectors participate in forestry business. This has created many jobs, people have stable income from the forest, contributing to significantly reducing pressure on natural forest exploitation, changing the face of rural and mountainous areas.
In addition, the agricultural sector has also vigorously implemented reforestation and forest environmental service payments, bringing about many positive results. Contributing to protecting, restoring and developing forests in each region in a sustainable manner, increasing forest cover and improving forest quality, maximizing protection capacity, contributing to ensuring ecological safety and flood prevention.
Notably, starting from 2023, Quang Tri is one of six localities in the North Central region to pilot receiving funds from forest carbon sequestration and storage services from the Carbon Fund through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. This is considered a priority solution to continue sustainable forest development.
