ORF, a public radio and television station in Austria, has apologized for cooking Frauennerfling fish — scientifically known as Rutilus pigus — on its “Deliciously Culinary” program last week, CBS reported on March 8.

The chef on the show said he was very sorry and explained that he got the fish from a friend, when asked to make a Lenten-friendly meal.

During Lent, Christians usually abstain from eating meat on Fridays.

“It was a series of unfortunate events, because I trusted my friend who had a license to catch some fish and I thought this one was also there,” he told AFP by phone.

According to local radio station Die Presse , during this week's broadcast of the program "Niederösterreich Today", moderator Claudia Schubert apologized: "Last week we cooked a Frauennerfling fish on the program 'Deliciously Culinary'. But this is a protected species. We apologize."

This fish has been on the red list in Austria since 2002 and is on the brink of extinction.

In neighboring Germany, the fish has also been banned from fishing since 1998. It has been listed on the red list – meaning endangered – by ICUN, an international conservation organization affiliated with the United Nations, since 2013.

Gregor Gravogl, director of the Austrian Fisheries Association, said his organization filed a complaint this week about the fishing of the endangered species. “This is an extremely sad incident that I have never encountered in my career,” Gravogl said.
