Busting a 200 billion VND football betting network

On May 22, the Criminal Police Department of Da Nang City Police said it had just coordinated with the Department of Technical Affairs of the Ministry of Public Security and police units and localities to eradicate a large-scale football betting ring.

Previously, at 6:00 a.m. yesterday, May 21, the Criminal Police Department of Da Nang City Police and other units simultaneously executed an emergency arrest warrant for Nguyen Tan Cong (36 years old, in Hoa Minh Ward, Lien Chieu District), Nguyen Thanh Xuan (38 years old, in Tho Quang Ward) and Dang Ngoc Hieu (34 years old, in Man Thai Ward, Son Tra District, Da Nang City) for football betting.

This is the result of the process of establishing a project to mobilize forces and means to fight and collect evidence against an online gambling ring in the form of football betting.

During the search of the group’s residence, the police seized about 500 pages of documents showing their history of football betting. In just over 1 month from April 16 to May 20, the amount of money bet by this group was more than 1.8 million USD (more than 40 billion VND).

In which, Nguyen Tan Cong is the mastermind, Nguyen Thanh Xuan is an accomplice who effectively assists Cong, and Hieu is Xuan's junior.

According to initial confession, from January 2024 to present, Cong contacted a bookmaker via social network Telegram to open a football betting account with a limit of 500,000 USD.

Cong divided this account into many levels to give to Xuan and Hieu to continue building the network of subordinates.

In this betting account, 1 USD is "converted" to 7,000 VND, then Cong can increase the USD price according to each level that Cong divides to his subordinates. The lower the level, the higher the USD denomination, up to 25,000 VND/USD.

This betting network receives bets from players on foreign football tournaments, and has bet about 200 billion VND since the beginning of the year. Cong and his accomplices divided and organized their activities tightly, operating the network using high-tech means.

Currently, the 3 suspects are being detained by the Criminal Police Department of Da Nang City Police to continue expanding the investigation, arrest related accomplices and consolidate the prosecution file for organizing gambling.
