The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is expected to formally nominate Joe Biden as its presidential candidate as early as July 21. The move is aimed at ending speculation about the possibility of a replacement for Biden after his underwhelming performance at the June 27 debate with Republican rival Donald Trump.
The Democratic Party had previously planned to nominate Mr. Biden before the party convention in August. However, an early nomination would quell internal party talk about calling for a candidate to replace Mr. Biden and strengthen party unity.
The DNC will hold several meetings from July 16 to July 21 to finalize the rules and procedures for the vote. Two Democratic sources familiar with the matter also confirmed that Democrats are likely to set the date for July 21, just three days after Republicans are expected to formally nominate Donald Trump.
The first live debate between Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump in the 2024 presidential election season took place on June 27 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mr. Biden's performance was considered to have fallen short of expectations.
Biden's campaign said he had a cold and was "over-prepared." They also said CNN moderators failed to fact-check Trump's statements during the debate.
Biden’s team also dismissed speculation that he would drop out of the race. Biden’s family members also supported his continued candidacy.
