KHANH HOA:
TPO - For many years, dozens of households in the "house on stilts" hamlet (Vinh Nguyen ward, Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province) have been waiting for a stable home, reducing the hardships in life. However, until now, that wish has not come true.

Following the alleys to the "house on stilts" neighborhood in Tay Hai 1 and Tay Hai 2 residential groups in Vinh Nguyen ward (Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province), we feel a different life with dozens of rickety, makeshift houses lying precariously. |
This is home to about 70 households, many of which have been in the family for 3-4 generations. The common point of these houses is that they are built with wooden poles and patched together with many different materials. |
The small house of only about 30 square meters is home to 5 family members of Mrs. Ho Thi Luom (65 years old). “We have 2 children of school age, but the area is small so they have to study, eat, and sleep in the same place. I really hope to create resettlement conditions so that my children and grandchildren have better development opportunities,” said Mrs. Luom. |
The stilt houses were built with a system of wooden piles. Over time and being hit by waves, they were damaged many times and had to be constantly repaired. |
Because the house area is small and often very hot in the summer, many people also take advantage of the area under the houses to weave nets, hang hammocks to lie down, enjoy the cool air, chat, etc. |
“My family has been at sea for generations. Although life here is precarious, if we don’t go to sea, we don’t know what to do. If I am resettled elsewhere, I hope to be given the opportunity to continue going to sea or to have a stable job,” said Huynh Thi Ha (50 years old). |
The space below the houses is also a playground for children born and raised here. |
Nguyen Van Khang (5th grade student, Vinh Nguyen Primary School) wishes to live in a spacious, bright house like other students and have his own study corner. |
Since the breakwater was built, people here no longer have to worry about their houses being destroyed by waves or having to flee the waves every stormy season, but deep down, everyone wants a more stable place to live. |
Mr. Nguyen Van Long (60 years old) said: “Every time we had to move to ensure safety during storms, it was very inconvenient because we lost our belongings and documents. Now the house is damaged a lot but I don’t know when I have to move so I don’t dare to repair it. People here all want to quickly move to a new place to stabilize their lives.” |
The old dilapidated houses had to be held up with ropes. |
Even though there is no longer any wave running, people in the "stilt house" neighborhood still have to use materials to brace their houses against the force of the sea wind. |
Behind the spacious high-rise buildings is a 'stilt house' neighborhood with many wishes for stability and a better life for the people here. Mr. Tran Quang Thinh - Vice Chairman of Vinh Nguyen Ward People's Committee, said: "The clearance and resettlement for people in this area is part of phase 2 of the Tay Hai embankment project. Currently, the project has completed phase 1, when phase 2 is implemented, there will be a plan for clearance for households". |
