An Giang seafood tycoon flees abroad: About to sell 400 billion debt

The couple leading Thuan An Company once went to China to attend a fair and then 'disappeared'. Up to now, the company's debt of hundreds of billions of dong has been put up for sale by the bank.

Agribank AMC has just announced the selection of an auction unit to sell the debt of Thuan An Company at Agribank An Giang province branch.

The above debt has a provisional value as of September 30, 2024 of more than 417 billion VND.

Of which, the principal debt is more than 289 billion VND, the remaining 128 billion is interest debt. Accordingly, the interest will continue to accrue from October 1, 2024 until the debt is fully paid.

As the debt is being prepared for sale for the first time, the starting auction price given by the bank is equal to the value of both principal and interest, more than 417 billion VND.

The debt is auctioned as-is (including the debt's status, legal status and potential risks) and on an as-is basis.

However, in the announcement, the bank did not disclose detailed information about the assets securing this debt. The legal documents of the debt only show that the loan has mortgage contracts on land use rights and assets attached to the land between the bank and Thuan An Company, and between the bank and Mr. Nguyen Thai Son and Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue Trinh.

It is known that Mr. Nguyen Thai Son is the chairman of Thuan An Company. Nguyen Thi Hue Trinh is Mr. Son's wife and also the general director of Thuan An Company.

Thuan An Company's full name is Thuan An Production, Trade and Service Company Limited (Tafishco) - a once very large seafood enterprise in An Giang but later got involved in a debt scandal.

Then, from October 29, 2016, the couple leading Thuan An Company went to China to attend a fishery fair and have not returned to the company since then. In 2017, Agribank An Giang branch sued Thuan An Company, demanding immediate payment of over 490 billion VND in debt.

At the same time, Agribank proposed to auction the company's collateral assets under mortgage contracts to recover debt.

At the same time, the An Giang Provincial People's Court also issued a decision to apply emergency measures to temporarily freeze the account of Thuan An Company opened at the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam, An Giang branch. The court's decision also applied to freeze the assets of this company.

After the news that Ms. Trinh and her husband "had stayed abroad" spread, many farmers came to Thuan An Company to demand money from selling fish, workers demanded unpaid wages, and many businesses also came to demand debts for purchasing supplies...
