NDO - Male patient suffered multiple injuries, closed abdominal trauma suspected of colon rupture, right eyeball injury, and bilateral hand injuries due to exploding gas tank.
On January 29 (the first day of the Lunar New Year), the 108 Military Central Hospital received and successfully treated an 18-year-old male patient who had a gas tank explosion. The patient had severe abdominal pain, bleeding eyes, crushed wounds, and bleeding from both hands. He was given first aid at the front line and transferred to the 108 Military Central Hospital.
The patient was admitted to the hospital with multiple injuries, abrasions on the abdomen, chest, abdominal distension, pain on palpation of the right flank, and obvious abdominal wall reaction. The right eye had a ruptured eyeball, the left eye had an injured eyelid, and no apparent damage to the eyeball. The injuries were complex, with the left hand and part of the right hand completely crushed.
Through examination, the doctor diagnosed the patient with multiple injuries, closed abdominal trauma suspected of colon rupture, right eyeball injury, and bilateral hand injuries due to a gas tank explosion in the 4th hour. The patient was consulted by specialists to agree on the above diagnosis and underwent surgery to treat the injuries.
The doctors urgently performed surgery to check all the organs in the abdominal cavity, cut the ruptured colon, restored the first digestive circulation, cleaned and drained the abdominal cavity; removed the right eyeball, cleaned the wound, fixed the first finger of the right hand, and cleaned and created a stump of the left hand.
This is a case of a patient with severe multiple injuries, complex injuries due to a gas cylinder explosion. This is considered a firearm injury, so when examining and performing surgery, there is a risk of missing injuries, secondary injuries in the late stage.
Thanks to timely diagnosis by doctors and close and rhythmic coordination of surgery, the patient received life-saving treatment. Post-operative care was also monitored comprehensively, closely, and thoughtfully by doctors and nurses, fostering early digestive recovery, early mobilization, preventing complications, and stabilizing digestion. Specialist II Doctor Diem Dang Binh, Deputy Head of the Department of Anorectal and Pelvic Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital said: This is a case of a patient with severe multiple trauma, complex injuries, multiple organs, injuries considered as trauma, gunshot wounds. However, the patient was consulted by specialists for diagnosis and prompt surgery.
The patient was operated on by experienced doctors in various specialties, there was a risk of missing injuries, and improper treatment, close monitoring was needed to detect secondary injuries and injuries caused by firearms. The emergency and intervention team had to race against time, taking advantage of every second on New Year's Day to save the patient's life.
During Tet, cooking time using gas cylinders in households will increase, as will the use of flammable materials such as firecrackers. According to doctors, exploding gas cylinders can easily cause injuries, multiple injuries that are life-threatening.
